Kester's dedication pays off
Ethan Kester's victory over West Holt's Tagen Kramer at Thursday's Greater Nebraska Activities Conference wrestling tournament took just one minute and 32 seconds, but it reflected years of hard work and dedication.
With the first-round pin, the Summerland junior secured his 100th career win, joining Alex and Jesse Thiele in the Bobcats' exclusive 100-win club.
"He is only the third wrestler to do it as a Bobcat," coach Dan Roeber said. "He has bigger goals both for the season and his career, and that's what we are shifting the focus to."
After the win, Kester flashed a grin as the referee raised his hand in victory. Summerland fans celebrated with '100' cards and a congratulatory banner.
"I'm proud to be the third Bobcat to achieve 100 wins," Kester said. "I think it's a great accomplishment that shows hard work pays off."
Kester's wrestling journey began at age four. Competing at 126 pounds as a freshman and 138 pounds last year, he's now in the 150-pound division. The sport, he said, builds both mental and physical toughness while teaching discipline and perseverance.
Guided by his father, Paul-a 2001 state champion for Clearwater-Kester finds extra meaning in the family connection.
"He knows me better than anyone and pushes me harder than any normal coach," Ethan said.
As the regular season winds down and district competition heats up, Kester has his sights set on future goals.
"The hardest challenges I've faced in wrestling have been overcoming the mental battles that come with every match," said the two-time state qualifier.
Coach Roeber believes Kester's determination will drive him forward.
"He can focus on those bigger goals. Ethan is a great competitor, and when he puts his mind to it, he is tough to beat," Roeber said.
