Michael (Mike) was born in Tilden, the eldest child of Leo and Ilene (Michaelson) Schmitz. His early years were spent on the farm in Clearwater, before moving to the Beatrice state home. In the 1970s, he became a part of the Northstar Program in Norfolk, where resided until his passing. Since a young age, Mike enjoyed the farm life, animals, tractors and spending time with friends and family.

During his time at Northstar, the staff supported him in his various jobs, some of which were the grocery reclamation center, working at the bar in Hoskins and delivering shoppers. Mike made a friend of everyone he met and would share pictures of his family until they wore out. His hobbies included horseback riding, bowling, fishing, quality vintage television shows, good food, the Special Olympics and, above all, people. He never outgrew his love for animals and John Deere tractors and could spot either from a great distance away.

Mike was preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his sister, Sally (Jim) Muegge of Omaha, two nieces, four great-nieces and nephews, and many loving extended-family members.

Mike's (Schmitty's) family extends heartfelt gratitude for the years of kindness, support and love that the Northstar community has shown to him. You are a part of his family and we love you.
