Summerland Public School BOARD OF EDUCATION

Summerland Public School Board of Education met in regular session, Wednesday, Jan. 15, in the school board room.
Vice president Nate Schwager called the meeting, which was advertised in the Jan. 8, 2025, newspapers, to order at 7 p.m.
The board recited the Pledge of Allegiance.
The board members took the oath of office. At this time, vice president Schwager designated authority to the superintendent to lead the meeting and take nominations for president.
Discuss, consider and take action on board officers and committees. Motion by Jeremy Wagner, seconded by Scott Thiele, to nominate Nate Schwager to serve as president of the board of education and ask that nominations cease. Voting aye: Ryan Ahlers, Chelsi McLain, Schwager, Thiele, Austin Twibell, Wagner. Nay: none. Motion carried, 6-0.
Motion by Twibell, seconded by Ahlers, to nominate Wagner to serve as vice president of the board of education. Voting aye: Ahlers, McLain, Schwager, Thiele, Twibell, Wagner. Nay: none. Motion carried, 6-0.
Motion by Thiele, seconded by Schwager, to nominate Austin Twibell to serve as secretary of the board of education and ask that nominations cease. Voting aye: Ahlers, McLain, Schwager, Thiele, Twibell, Wagner. Nay: none. Motion carried, 6-0.
Motion by Twibell, seconded by McLain, to nominate Scott Thiele to serve as treasurer of the board of education and ask that nominations cease. Voting aye: Ahlers, McLain, Schwager, Thiele, Twibell, Wagner. Nay: none. Motion carried, 6-0.
Motion by Thiele, seconded by Twibell, to remove Bank of Orchard from the list of depositories. Voting aye: Ahlers, McLain, Schwager, Thiele, Twibell, Wagner. Nay: none. Motion carried, 6-0.
After Schwager was elected president, Superintendent Aschoff handed the gavel over to him and he presided over the rest of the meeting.
The following officers were elected by ballot to serve for 2025: president, Nate Schwager; vice president, Jeremy Wagner; secretary, Austin Twibell; treasurer, Scott Thiele.
The following committees were established for 2025:
Americanism: Wagner, Thiele, McLain
Finance/Negotiations: Twibell, Schwager, McLain
Buildings, Grounds and Transportation: Thiele, Wagner, Ahlers
Goals/Strategic Planning: Schwager, Wagner, Twibell.
Designations for 2025 are:
Recording Secretary: Sally Finch
Attorney: KSB School Law
Newspapers: Summerland Advocate-Messenger, Antelope County News, Norfolk Daily News
Depositories: Cornerstone Bank (Orchard and Clearwater branches), Chambers State Bank (Ewing branch), Nebraska Liquid Assets Fund.
Roll call was taken. All board members were present.
Motion by Wagner, seconded by Ahlers, to approve the agenda as presented. Voting aye: Ahlers, McLain, Schwager, Thiele, Twibell, Wagner. Nay: none. Motion carried, 6-0.
Public participation. Public participation was not heard.
Motion by McLain, seconded by Twibell, to approve the consent agenda. Voting aye: Ahlers, McLain, Schwager, Thiele, Twibell, Wagner. Nay: none. Motion carried, 6-0.
Discuss, consider and take action of staffing. Motion by Ahlers, second by McLain, to approve a teaching contract to Andrew Steskal for the 2025-2026 school year. Voting aye: Ahlers, McLain, Schwager, Thiele, Twibell, Wagner. Nay: none. Motion carried, 6-0.
Motion by Twibell, seconded by Wagner, to approve a custodial work agreement to Renee Ramold. Voting aye: Ahlers, McLain, Schwager, Thiele, Twibell, Wagner. Nay: none. Motion carried, 6-0.
Discuss, consider and take action on Retirement Incentive Applications.
Motion by Ahlers, seconded by Twibell, to accept the resignation of Jim Schutt at the end of the 2024-2025 school year and approve his application for the retirement incentive program. Voting aye: Ahlers, McLain, Schwager, Thiele, Twibell, Wagner. Nay: none. Motion carried, 6-0.
Motion by Wagner, seconded by Thiele, to accept the resignation of Julie Harley at the end of the 2024-2025 school year and approve her application for the Retirement Incentive Program. Voting aye: Ahlers, McLain, Schwager, Thiele, Twibell, Wagner. Nay: none. Motion carried, 6-0.
Motion by Thiele, seconded by McLain, to accept the resignation of Misty Nilson at the end of the 2024-2025 school year and approve her application for the Retirement Incentive Program.
NASB update. Supt. Aschoff reported that she would be attending the Legislative Conference in Lincoln on Feb. 16-17.
Administrative reports:
Elementary Principal Cathy Cooper: Report cards, MTSS, fall to winter reading data.
JH/HS Principal Jacob Birch: MTSS, report cards, cell phones, District NSAA meeting, activities.
Supt. Molly Aschoff: cell phones, ALICAP walk through, Title IX, Legislative update, 2025-26 calendar, hiring ESU workshop, board retreat.
The next regular board meeting will be Feb. 12, 2025, at 7 p.m. The March regular board meeting will be Monday, March 10, at 7 p.m.
Pres. Schwager adjourned the meeting at 7:50 p.m.
