The Summerland Bobcats shook off a slow start to claim a decisive 65-22 victory over the Niobrara/Verdigre Cougars in a non-conference matchup Friday, Dec. 13.
While the Bobcats led 16-0 after the first quarter, Coach Brett Kaczor noted the team lacked its usual intensity early on. "We came out flat in the first half against N/V. We got a lot of good looks, but we were just not locked in enough to finish possessions," Kaczor said.
The Cougars managed to get on the board in the second quarter, posting 11 points, but Summerland still held a commanding 32-11 lead at halftime.
Kaczor addressed his team at the break, taking responsibility for the sluggish start. "I told the guys at halftime it was on me that I didn't have them 100% ready to play that game right away."
The pep talk sparked the Bobcats, as they returned to the floor with renewed energy and focus. Summerland erupted for 21 points in the third quarter, while holding the Cougars to just five. The Bobcats' strong execution on both ends of the court continued into the fourth quarter, sealing the 65-22 win.
"We came out with better energy and execution in the second half to put that game away," Kaczor added.
No individual statistics were available at press time, but the dominant team effort earned Summerland another convincing victory.
The Bobcats were slated to face Stuart, Tuesday, Dec. 17 and will travel to O'Neill, Thursday, Dec. 19.
