Mendoza, Kester, Shaver lead Bobcats

The Bobcat boys' wrestlers traveled to Howells, Saturday, for the Howells-Dodge Invite.

Summerland finished ninth in the field of 20 teams, earning 52 points.

Hartington Cedar Catholic and Tekamah-Herman tied for first, with 148.5 points. West-Point Beemer ended in third, scoring 121.

Austin Mendoza brought home a bronze medal in the 144 class.

He picked up wins by fall against Heydon Velez, Ponca, and Oliver Belina, HD; and defeated Elgin Public Pope John's Grady Drueke, 10-0.

In the championship bracket, Mendoza lost by tech fall, in 1:35, to Bodie Hochstein, HCC. He won, 16-7, over Gerardo Flores, WPB, in the third-place match.

Ethan Kester placed third in the 150 division. He owned with a pin over Parker Goodin, TH; Noah Schmidt, Stanton, in 3:37; and Landon Burt, TH.

In the championship bracket, Kester dropped a 8-1 decision to Easton Hochstein, HCC and rebounded with a 74 sudden victory over Walker Ott, Wisner-Pilger.

Jason Shaver brought home a bronze medal in the 215-pound division.

He opened with a win by fall, in :42, over Jeremiah Brown, Archbishop Bergan and pinned Kyptin Collier, HCC, in 1:14. In the third round, Shaver pinned Conner Probst, Homer, in :36.

In the championship bracket, he met Omar Garcia, WPB, and lost by fall, in 3:34. In the match for third place, Shaver, pinned Jaden Venegas, Lyons-Decatur, in :35.

Two wrestlers earned medals in the 126-pound division. Luke Kester finished fourth and Ayden Bazelman, fifth.

Kester pinned Huffman, Caylix Homer, in :53, in round-one competition. In round two, Kester lost by fall, in 1:19, to Tanner Renner, WPB, and pinned Ryuto Yamamoto, BR, in 1:45 in the third round.

In the consolation round one, Kester pinned Aiden Jurgensen, Clarkson/Leigh, in :45 and pinned Bazelman, in 1:59.

Bazelman began the day with a win by pin, in :47, over Drew Engel, Archangels Catholic, and in round two, defeated Mason Tobin, T-H, in 1:35. In round three, Bazelman lost by fall, in 1:46, to Landon Bonneau, BR.

Two Bobcats competed in the 138 class.

In round one, Isaac Mendoza pinned Kody Bartling, HCC, in 2:58, and won by tech fall 1.5, in 3:25, over Casey Chadwick of Ponca in the second round.

Mendoza lost to Maverick Heine, HCC, by fall, in 3:56 in the semifinal and defeated Mast, 10-3, in the third-place match.

Steven Mast opened with a pin over Evan Coufal, HD. Mast claimed a 21-8 decision over Lane Fischer, Wakefield, in round three.

In the semifinal, Mast lost to Josue Munoz, Homer, by a tech fall, in 2:45. He finished fourth after competing against Mendoza, losing 10-3.

Lane Sanne wrestled at 120, finishing in fifth place. He fell to Wyatt Miserez, WPB, in round one, losing by fall, in 2:13. In round two, Evan Wolf, AB, pinned Sanne in :41. Chase Schartz, Stanton, pinned Sanne, in 2:29, in the third round.

Sanne earned a 16-4 major decision over Jadyn Olmer, AC, in round four, before losing by fall, in :46, to Blayne Williams, TH.

Mat Umphress finished sixth in the 165-pound class. He opened with a win by fall, in 5:48, over Brody Kleinschmidt, HCC, and bounced back with a pin, in :57, over Preston Kumm, HD. In round three, he lost by fall, in 3:22, to Alex Braniff, TH.

That set up a consolation match against Landyn Veik, EPPJ. Umphress earned a 7-1 decision. In the fifth-place match, he lost by fall, in 2:40, to Jackson Winn, WPB.

Liam Cleveland competed in the 126-pound division. He faced Blane Stutzman, HD, in the opening round, losing by fall, in 1:50.

In round two, Cleveland claimed a 6-3 sudden victory over Aiden Jurgensen, CL, before falling to Jaiden Trampe, Elm Creek, in :57, in the third round.

Jacob Schlecht competed in the 215 division. In round one, he lost by fall, in 2:34, to Justice Blecher, EPPJ. Schlecht won in round two, pinning, Leonardo Hernndez-Ledezma ,Cedar Bluffs, in 3:17. In round three, he lost to Omar Garcia, WPB, in 1:30.
