Lady Cats split games during opening weekend

One and one.

That's how the first weekend of Bobcat girls basketball played out.

Summerland hosted Neligh-Oakdale on Dec. 5 and won, 52-35. Kanyon Allemang led the team with 18 points and Caydence Schumacher added 13.

On Saturday, Summerland traveled to Hartington-Newcastle and fell short, 54-47. Lydia Robertson led the team with 21 points. Jenna Funk pulled in 11 rebounds.

Head coach Jackson Medina said his squad shows a lot of promise "and looks to improve as the year progresses."

"We are young, as we have two freshmen that play big minutes for us, in addition to having girls who are in new and bigger roles than they have been in the past. We have things to clean up and improve upon, but the foundation is there," Medina said. "We are very close to being a really good team that can give problems to any team that we face."

Medina said as the season plays out, the game will slow down, offering opportunities for success.

"Our responsibilities will become more clear and we will play good basketball," he said.

In the meantime, the Lady Cats look to senior leader Lydia Robertson to take charge.

"She is our most experienced player that we have and she is very talented as a scorer. When we need a bucket, or a stop, or even simply need to calm the waters, she is the one we are looking to right now," Medina said.

The Lady Bobcats have a second week filled with big games, starting Dec. 10, when Norfolk Catholic comes to town.

He also expects solid competition from Niobrara/Verdigre and Boyd County, who the Bobcats face on Friday and Saturday, respectively.

"We are always going after the wins but we are also looking to improve our overall flow of offense and find some consistency in the half court. We have good basketball players that have a high ceiling," the coach said.
