Summerland Public School Board of Education met in regular session, Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2024 in the board meeting room. President Steve Thiele called the regular meeting, which was advertised in the Nov. 6, 2024, newspapers, to order at 7:01 p.m.
President Thiele noted the Open Meetings Act posted in the boardroom.
Roll call was taken, with all board members present: Ed Nordby, Nate Schwager, Scott Thiele, Steve Thiele, Austin Twibell, Jeremy Wagner. Motion by Schwager, seconded by Twibell, to approve the agenda as presented. Voting aye: Nordby, Schwager, Thiele, Thiele, Twibell, Wagner. Motion carried, 6-0.
Public participation. There was no public participation.
Motion by Scott Thiele, seconded by Wagner, to approve the consent agenda items, including minutes of the Oct. 16, 2024, meeting and monthly financial report. Unless removed from the consent agenda, items identified within the consent agenda will be acted on at one time. Voting aye: Nordby, Schwager, Thiele, Thiele, Twibell, Wagner. Motion carried, 6-0.
Old business:
Discuss, consider and take action on sealed bids. Motion by Schwager, seconded by Steve Thiele, to accept the bid from Aschoff Construction of $500 for the scissor lift. Voting aye: Nordby, Schwager, Thiele, Thiele, Twibell, Wagner. Motion carried, 6-0.
New business:
Discuss, consider and take action on the 2023-2024 school audit. Auditor Marcy Luth gave the board a report on the audit for the 2023-24 school year, via phone call.
Motion by Nordby, seconded by Schwager, to approve the 2023-24 fiscal year audit as presented. Voting aye: Nordby, Schwager, Thiele, Thiele, Twibell, Wagner. Motion carried, 6-0.
Discussion on board goals with Marcia Herring from NASB. Marcia Herring, from the Nebraska Association of School Boards, was present to discuss board goals. She also presented a proposal for assisting with strategic planning.
Discussion, consider and take action on approving an engineering agreement for additional parking. After some discussion, the board requested that Superintendent Aschoff have legal counsel look over the agreement and inquire with Advanced Consulting about an additional agreement to assess the lighting for the area.
Motion by Steve Thiele, seconded by Schwager, to approve an agreement for engineering services with Advanced Consulting Engineering Services, Inc., in the amount of $10,000 for additional parking plans, contingent on KSB Law review. Voting aye: Nordby, Schwager, Thiele, Thiele, Twibell, Wagner. Motion carried, 6-0.
Discuss the evaluation of the superintendent (closed session possible). President Thiele gave a summary review of the evaluation of Supt. Aschoff.
NASB update: Supt. Aschoff reminded the board of the new board member workshop in Norfolk on Dec. 2. She will reach out to new members once we know who they are. Aschoff will be attending the State Education Conference next week in Omaha.
Administrative reports:
Supt. Aschoff: School Bus Safety Week, threat assessment training, additional lockers installed, Nebraska Advantage article, maintenance work, new appliances, activity bus, wheelchair van.
She also announced that elementary principal, Cathy Cooper, is the recipient of the NCSA and NAESP Elementary Distinguished Principal of the Year. She will receive her award and be recognized in December at the principal’s conference. Congratulations to Principal Cooper.
Elementary Principal Cathy Cooper: Scholastic book fair, Muffins with Misses, MTSS, Coins for a Cause, MANDT.
High School Principal Jacob Birch: Veterans Day program, fall activities, winter activities, District III NSAA meeting.
The next regular board meeting will be Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2024, at 7 p.m.
President Thiele adjourned the meeting at 8:42 p.m.
