Reliable, Trustworthy Reporting, Capturing The Heartbeat Of Our Community
Whether the luck of the Irish was with them or if a divine power intervened, emergency personnel are thankful no injuries were reported in an explosion that rocked O'Neill before sunrise on Monday.
At approximately 5:55 a.m., an explosion occurred in the St. Patrick's Parish Center.
Initial reports of liquid oxygen tanks exploding were debunked by Terry Miles of the O'Neill Fire Department, who reported where the fire originated.
Following the explosion, KBRX Radio owner Scott Poese reported flames as high as 50 to 60 feet were visible shortly after the blast occurred.
Homes within a two-block radius were evacuated. Debris filled the 300 block of east Adams Street and could be found half a block from the site. Damage to area homes was at a minimum, primarily broken windows. Shattered glass was visible in an Avera parking lot, north of the hospital.
Avera St. Anthony's officials announced that 911 medical emergencies would be diverted to area hospitals, including Atkinson and Neligh.
A modified emergency room was set in the O'Neill Community Center. Individuals who were evacuated and do not have a place to stay may take shelter at the community center.
Damage did occur to windows and doors on the east side of the hospital.
