Orchard Library receives budget increase

Village officials give nod during August meeting

Orchard Public Library representatives made its budget presentation to Orchard Village trustees during the Aug. 12 board meeting.

Library director Donna Hamilton and library board member Amanda Shabram requested $21,000 - $1,750 monthly - for the 2024-2025 budget.

Village clerk Brenda Harrison reported this is an increase of $3,806.27 annually, which is a $317.19 monthly boost.

Prior to the budget presentation, Hamilton reviewed the library’s annual report, noting the number of visitors has increased.

She noted that 55 children participated in the summer reading program. The library received a Nebraska Library Commission grant for a summer intern. Hamilton said Preslie and Lydia Robertson filled the position and assisted with summer reading, working with children ages 1 to 8.

Trustee John Ferguson made a motion to accept the budget. Following a second by Dwight Van Ostrand, the motion passed unanimously.

In other business, trustees:

• Signed Resolution 08.12.2024 for the Municipal Annual Certification, appointing Chris Miller as the 2024 street superintendent.

• Received an update on nuisance properties. Trustee Steph Cleveland noted a pickup and tractor need to be removed from Harrison Street.

• Discussed placing two speed limit signs within village limits.

• Approved adding a 220 outlet outside the community center, following a request from Kristi Schutt.

• Set Sept. 16 as the next meeting date.
