A longtime educator will fill a void this fall at Summerland Public Schools.
Laurel Miller, who previously taught at Clearwater, will teach math.
Cathy Cooper, elementary principal, said only a handful of applications were received to fill a position left vacant after Jacob Birch accepted the junior/senior high school principal's job.
Cooper, along with incoming superintendent Molly Aschoff, talked with former retirees about the position.
"Laurel (Miller) has both a science and math background," Cooper said. "She's a spitfire and full of energy."
Miller will take on the position for one year.
Cooper said current principal Zach Rosenboom reached out to Wayne State College.
"We potentially will have a student teacher for spring semester," Cooper said. "That's our one-year fix. We'll advertise early on next year."
The contract for the 2024-2025 school year was unanimously approved. Board member Jeremy Wagner was absent.
