Summerland Public School Board of Education met in regular session, Tuesday, May 14, 2024. President Steve Thiele called the meeting, which was advertised in the May 8, 2024, newspapers, to order at 7 p.m. Thiele noted the Open Meetings Act posted in the boardroom.

Roll call was taken. Present: Ed Nordby, Nate Schwager, Scott Thiele, Steve Thiele, Austin Twibell. Absent: Wagner.

Motion by Nordby, seconded by Thiele, to approve the absence of Jeremy Wagner. Voting aye: Nordby, Schwager, Thiele, Thiele, Twibell. Nay: none. Absent: Wagner.

Motion by Schwager, seconded by Twibell, to approve the agenda as presented.

Public participation. Public participation was not heard.

Motion by Nordby, seconded by Steve Thiele, to approve the consent agenda items. Unless removed from the consent agenda, items identified within the consent agenda will be acted on at one time. Included are minutes of the April 15, 2024, meeting and monthly financial report. Voting aye: Nordby, Schwager, Thiele, Thiele, Twibell. Nay: none. Absent: Wagner.

New Business:

Discuss, consider and approve teacher contract. Motion by Scott Thiele, seconded by Schwager, to approve a teaching contract to Laurel Miller for the 2024-2025 school year. Voting aye: Nordby, Schwager, Thiele, Thiele, Twibell. Nay: none. Absent: Wagner.

Discuss, consider and take action on classified staff work agreements for 2024-2025. Superintendent Finke reported on the negotiation committee’s recommendations for classified staff work agreements. Motion by Nordby, seconded by Twibell, to approve a 4% increase to all classified staff and raise the activity /route over 40 miles pay to $15 per hour/route, as recommended by the negotiations committee. Voting aye: Nordby, Schwager, Thiele, Thiele, Twibell. Nay: none. Absent: Wagner.

Discuss, consider and take action on amending the 2024-2025 calendar. Motion by Scott Thiele, seconded by Nordby, to make the recommended change to the 2024-2025 school calendar. Voting aye: Nordby, Schwager, Thiele, Thiele, Twibell. Nay: none. Absent: Wagner.

Discuss, consider and take action on the substitute pay for 2024-2025 school year. Supt. Finke reported on substitute pay for area schools. Motion by Steve Thiele, seconded by Scott Thiele, to increase the full day sub pay to $130 and the five-consecutive days to $140. Voting aye: Nordby, Schwager, Thiele, Thiele, Twibell. Nay: none. Absent: Wagner.

Discuss, consider and take action on declaring shop equipment obsolete and selling. Supt. Finke presented pictures of the equipment in the shop that Mr. Odell would like to sell. Motion by Twibell, seconded by Schwager, to declare the shop equipment obsolete as presented with the equipment to be sold. Voting aye: Nordby, Schwager, Thiele, Thiele, Twibell. Nay: none. Absent: Wagner.

NASB update. Supt. Finke updated the board on changes to Title IX. He also reported on LB71 which concerns PK- and kindergarten-age eligibility.

Administrative reports:

Mrs. Cooper, elementary principal: MTSS, MMM, sixth-grade transition, summer reading, move-up day, preschool graduation, DARE, kindergarten readers’ theater, coins for a cause, field trips, track and field day, National Family and Community Engagement Conference.

Mr. Rosenboom, junior high/high school principal: graduation, district music, state track, state golf, academic awards, athletic banquet, sixth-grade transition, summer activities, activity sponsors for 2024-2025.

Mr. Finke, superintendent: external visit report, Civil Rights outcome, need for a scissor lift.

The next regular board meeting will be Monday, June 10, 2024, at 7 p.m.
