Omaha-based poet visits Summerland

Jewel Rodgers, an interdisciplinary poet and activist from Omaha, recently celebrated National Poetry Month with Summerland English classes.

During the event, she shared some of her own poetry and led engaging activities to inspire students to develop their creativity. Jewel's passion extends beyond poetry; she is dedicated to fighting urban blight in her community. To achieve this, she has completed two notable projects in North Omaha: Tierra Park, a charming pocket park located at 2413 Spencer St., and Caden's Corner, a vibrant skate ramp and community garden at 3703 Florence Blvd.

Her next goal is to create affordable housing and small commercial spaces in her North Omaha neighborhood.

Throughout her projects, Jewel emphasizes the importance of community involvement in both development and maintenance. She holds a bachelor's degree in business from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and a master's degree in real estate development from New York University. Jewel's work serves as a powerful example of how art and community engagement can create positive change.

Rogers creates with the purpose to connect. Her work has resonated across the Midwest and MidAtlantic regions, appearing in spoken word, public speaking, and multimedia projects, such as 100 Years | 100 Women TEDxLincoln and Amplifying the Black Experience, Opera Omaha.
