March 12, 2024
Summerland Public School Board of Education held a regular meeting, March 12, 2024, at 7 p.m. President Steve Thiele called the meeting, which was published in the March 6, 2024, newspapers to order at 7 p.m.
Thiele noted the Open Meetings Act posted in the boardroom.
Roll call was taken. Members present: Ed Nordby, Nate Schwager, Scott Thiele, Steve Thiele, Austin Twibell, Jeremy Wagner.
Motion by Twibell, seconded by Nordby, to approve the agenda. Voting aye: Nordby, Schwager, Thiele, Thiele, Twibell, Wagner. Nay: none. Motion carried, 6-0.
Public participation was not heard.
Motion by Nordby, seconded by Scott Thiele, to approve the consent agenda items. Unless removed from the consent agenda, items identified within the consent agenda will be acted on at one time. Consent agenda includes minutes of the Feb. 12, 2024, meeting; March 4, 2024, special meeting and monthly financial report. Voting aye: Nordby, Schwager, Thiele, Thiele, Twibell, Wagner. Nay: none. Motion carried, 6-0.
Old business:
Discuss, consider and take action on elementary principal contract. Discussion was held concerning the changes to the elementary principal's contract. Motion by Schwager, seconded by Twibell, to approve a contract to Cathy Cooper as the elementary principal for the 2024-2025 school year. Voting aye: Nordby, Schwager, Thiele, Thiele, Twibell, Wagner. Nay: none. Motion carried, 6-0.
Discuss, consider and take necessary action on the 2024-2025 school calendar. Superintendent Finke noted a few changes that had been made to the 2024-2025 calendar. Motion by Schwager, seconded by Wagner, to approve the 2024-2025 school calendar. Voting aye: Nordby, Schwager, Thiele, Thiele, Twibell, Wagner. Nay: none. Motion carried, 6-0.
New business:
Discuss, consider and take action on staff resignations.
Motion by Scott Thiele, seconded by Schwager, to accept the resignation of Tony Tabbert as custodian, effective April 19. Voting aye: Nordby, Schwager, Thiele, Thiele, Twibell, Wagner. Nay: none. Motion carried, 6-0.
Motion by Nordby, seconded by Schwager, to accept the resignation of Zach Rosenboom as high school principal/athletic director at the end of his current contract. Voting aye: Nordby, Schwager, Thiele, Thiele, Twibell, Wagner. Nay: none. Motion carried, 6-0.
Discuss, consider and take action to approve a teacher contract. Supt. Finke reported that he and Mrs. Cooper interviewed three candidates. Motion by Twibell, seconded by Scott Thiele, to approve a teaching contract for the 2024-2025 school year to Presley Young as an elementary teacher. Voting aye: Nordby, Schwager, Thiele, Thiele, Twibell, Wagner. Nay: none. Motion carried, 6-0.
Discuss information from FirstNet Solution on cell booster program for first responders. Nordby reported on the FirstNet program, which provides cell phone boosters for first responders. This would allow first responders, who respond to the school for emergency situations, to have better cell service. They would provide up to three boosters per building. Any additional boosters needed would be at the district's cost. The tech people from FirstNet are scheduled to come to the building and survey the site for installation.
NASB update. Supt. Finke updated the board on current legislation involving education.
Administrative reports:
Elementary principal, Mrs. Cooper: curriculum, MTSS, Dr. Seuss Read Across America, Monday Morning Motivation, upcoming external visitation.
JH/HS principal, Mr. Rosenboom: progress reports, winter sports update, spring sports update, quiz bowl, state speech, FFA, NHS induction, ACT test, HAL Day at Wheeler Central, shot clocks, upcoming events
Supt. Finke: response to complaint from Civil Rights Office, teacher contracts will go out March 15, science candidate interview, new conference name will be Greater Northeast Activity Conference (GNAC), NRCSA spring conference.
The next regular board meeting will be Monday, April 15 at 7 p.m. The board will hold a workshop, Tuesday, April 2, at 4:30 p.m.
President Thiele adjourned the meeting at 7:43 p.m.
