Livingston places in state recitation contest

Carlee Livingston, a Summerland junior, placed third in the state finals of Poetry Out Loud, a national recitation contest held Saturday at the Sheldon Art Gallery in Lincoln.

Six students from across the state vied for first prize: $200, a $500 voucher for their school to purchase poetry books and an all-expense paid trip for two to the national finals in Washington, D.C.

Students represented Burwell, Cedar Catholic, Marian, Summerland, Wahoo and the North Platte Public Library. Elizabeth Boucher of Marian took first, while William Mortensen of Wahoo was second.

All six students recited two poems; then, the top three competed in the final round.

Livingston won her classroom competition, and along with other classroom winners, submitted two videos to become the school champion. Her English instructor, Julie Harley, then submitted Livingston's videos to the state, which were judged and earned her a spot in the state finals.

Though Livingston didn't earn scholarship money, she earned an original work of art, a one-of-a-kind blown glass globe.
