Take Note: It's going to be a great School Year.

Finke focuses on new school year, "Paws"-itivity flourishes in opening session

Drive, and the pursuit of following one's aspirations, took center stage, Tuesday, as Summerland Public School students returned for the opening day of the 2023-2024 school year.

Superintendent Kyle Finke said several changes in the district give students "everything you need to be successful, no matter what you decide to do."

Finke introduced the word of the year - drive - for the upcoming school term.

"I hope you have some drive this year, that you focus on that and become better and better students," he said.

Since becoming superintendent, Finke has challenged students to push themselves to match the intent of the word of the year.

In 2021-2022, he stressed opportunity, especially since the school opened the new facility. Last year, he encouraged students to focus and strive to work toward a goal.

Elementary principal Cathy Cooper introduced the elementary theme: What kind of print do your paws make? Be paws-itive.

She shared a personal story about keeping a positive outlook.Cooper recently broke a wrist, requiring surgery, and said the incident "made her a little bit down."

"I'm positive it happened for a reason. I think I need to slow down a little bit ... I'm going to focus on that."

She challeneged upper level students to leave positive footprints for elementary students.

Zach Rosenboom, grades 7 through 12 principal, greeted students saying he is "honored" to serve as the new principal and athletic director.

"I want you all to know our school fosters an environment for each of you to build scholastics and support for you to reach your potential. Education goes beyond academics. In my mind, it is about character, empathy and passion for lifelong learning."

He encouraged students to participate in an as many activities as possible and challenged students to establish personal goals for the upcoming year.

"Don't be afraid to step out of your comfort zone," he said.

Students were dismissed at 1:30, with staff attending in-service training.

Classes were scheduled to meet in regular session, beginning Wednesday.
