Reliable, Trustworthy Reporting, Capturing The Heartbeat Of Our Community
The Summerland Advocate-Messenger, along with other newspapers across the state, will celebrate community journalism during the first-ever Community Newspaper Week, June 26 - 30.
Gov. Jim Pillen made the proclamation in April, during Nebraska Press Association's annual get-together in Lincoln. Pillen's proclamation recognizes the historical record provided by newspapers, as well as a newspaper's responsibility to serve as a watchdog, promoting transparency and its role as an economic contributor at local and state levels.
"I do hereby urge all citizens to read their local newspaper and recognize the important role newspapers have in our local communities," the decree read.
In recognition of Pillen's designation, SAM co-publisher Scott Schindler said, "The newspaper plays an important role in the community. It's an accurate record of events and the people who live in our communities."
While newspapers are stopping or slowing the presses across the United States, the "Advocate-Messenger" is nearing the beginning of it's fifth volume of printing.
"We made it through the pandemic, which started six months after opening," Schindler said. "We continue to work hard to bring important stories to our readers."
SAM will host an open house, celebrating community newspapers week, Wednesday, June 28, from 1:30 to 3 p.m., at The Office, 522 Main Street, in Clearwater.
"We invite everyone to stop by and learn more about community journalism," Schindler said.
