Summerland SCHOOL BOARD OF EDUCATION

June 13, 2023

Summerland School Board of Education met in regular session, Tuesday, June 13, 2023, at 12 p.m. President Steve Thiele called the meeting, which was advertised in the June 7, 2023, newspapers, to order at 12:01 p.m. Thiele noted the Open Meetings Act posted in the boardroom.

Roll call was taken and all members were present: Ed Nordby, Nate Schwager, Scott Thiele, Steve Thiele, Austin Twibell, Jeremy Wagner.

Motion by Twibell, seconded by Scott Thiele, to approve the agenda: Voting aye: Nordby, Schwager, Thiele, Thiele, Twibell, Wagner. Nay: none. Motion carried.

Public participation (15 minutes allowed). Public participation was heard.

Motion by Nordby, seconded by Wagner, to approve the consent agenda. Unless removed from the consent agenda, items within the consent agenda will be acted on at one time: minutes of the May 16, 2023, meeting and monthly financial report. Voting aye: Nordby, Schwager, Thiele, Thiele, Twibell, Wagner. Nay: none. Motion carried.

Old business: Discuss, consider and take all necessary action on lawn equipment. Discussion was held concerning the bids and whether to purchase a mower or continue to hire it out. This item was tabled until the July meeting.

New business.

Discuss, consider and take all necessary action on technology plan and purchases for 2023-2024. Motion by Scott Thiele, seconded by Nordby, to approve the use of REAP funds to purchase chromebooks, laptops and a desktop from Bluum, per their quote. Voting aye: Nordby, Schwager, Thiele, Thiele, Twibell, Wagner. Nay: none. Motion carried.

Discuss, consider and take all necessary action on the 3000 policy section. Motion by Schwager, seconded by Nordby, to approve the changes to the #3000 policies as presented. Voting aye: Nordby, Schwager, Thiele, Thiele, Twibell, Wagner. Nay: none. Motion carried.

Discuss the new goal/evaluation process. President Thiele reported on the process of using the new goal/evaluation tool. He also reported on the highlights of the report. The recommendation is to set up a committee to work with the superintendent to set goals as a followup to the evaluation and work on the strategic planning process. Committee members will be Wagner, Schwager and Steve Thiele.

NASB update. Supt. Finke reported on the legislation that has passed. There is quite a bit of “gray” area that is still being worked through between the legislation and NDE.

Administrative reports: Cathy Cooper, elementary principal: Social studies curriculum, MTSS, elementary track and field day, preschool graduation;

Kyle Finke, superintendent: Accreditation for 2023-24, update on the waterproofing of the south exterior wall of the shop room, annual Booster Club Golf tournament.

Motion by Schwager, seconded by Wagner, to enter executive session and is necessary to protect the reputation of individuals. Voting aye: Nordby, Schwager, Thiele, Thiele, Twibell, Wagner. Nay: none. Motion carried.

The board came out of executive session at 1:14 p.m.

The next regular board meeting will be Monday, July 17, 2023, at 7 p.m.

President Thiele adjourned the meeting at 1:14 p.m.
