Summerland Public School Board of Education met in regular session, Tuesday, March 14, 2023, at 6:30 p.m. President Steve Thiele called the meeting, which was advertised in the March 8, 2023, paper, to order at 6:30 p.m.

Thiele noted the open meeting act posted in the board room.

Roll call was taken. Members present: Ed Nordby, Nate Schwager, Scott Thiele, Steve Thiele, Austin Twibell and Jeremy Wagner. Absent: none.

Motion by Nordby, seconded by Scott Thiele, to approve the agenda as presented. Voting aye: Nordby, Schwager, Thiele, Thiele, Twibell, Wagner. Nay: none. Motion carried, 6-0.

Public participation was heard.

Motion by Schwager, seconded by Nordby, to approve the consent agenda items, including minutes of the Feb. 15, 2023, meeting and monthly financial report. Voting aye: Nordby, Schwager, Thiele, Thiele, Twibell, Wagner. Nay: none. Motion carried, 6-0.

Old business.

Summerland Public School Foundation update. Superintendent Kyle Finke updated the board on the progress of the foundation. Laura Ferguson, Nordby and Finke met with attorney Marty Klein and he has begun the paperwork to set up the 501(c)3.

Finke spoke with Jarod Bearinger at Bearinger Tax & Accounting, LLC, and he agreed to be the accountant of record.

New business.

Discuss, consider and take all necessary action on resignations. Motion by Schwager, seconded by Twibell, to accept the resignation of Becky Eickholt at the end of the 2022-2023 school year. Voting aye: Nordby, Schwager, Thiele, Thiele, Twibell, Wagner. Nay: none. Motion carried, 6-0.

Motion by Nordby, seconded by Wagner, to accept the resignation of Bonnie Mitchell at the end of the 2022-2023 school year. Voting aye: Nordby, Schwager, Thiele, Thiele, Twibell, Wagner. Nay: none. Motion carried, 6-0.

Motion by Nordby, seconded by Scott Thiele, to accept the resignation of Morgan Schrunk at the end of the 2022-2023 school year. Voting aye: Nordby, Schwager, Thiele, Thiele, Twibell, Wagner. Nay: none. Motion carried, 6-0.

Motion by Nordby, seconded by Twibell, to accept the resignation of Heather Jackson at the end of the 2022-2023 school year. Voting aye: Nordby, Schwager, Thiele, Thiele, Twibell, Wagner. Nay: none. Motion carried, 6-0.

Discuss, consider and take all necessary action to approve teacher contracts. Motion by Schwager, seconded by Wagner, to approve a contract to Ashley Harrison as family consumer science teacher for the 2023-2024 school year. Voting aye: Nordby, Schwager, Thiele, Thiele, Twibell, Wagner. Nay: none. Motion carried, 6-0.

Motion by Scott Thiele, seconded by Schwager, to approve a contract to Kara Ahlers as an elementary teacher for the 2023-2024 school year. Voting aye: Nordby, Schwager, Thiele, Thiele, Twibell, Wagner. Nay: none. Motion carried, 6-0.

Motion by Nordby, seconded by Wagner, to approve a contract to Ashley Larby as an elementary teacher for the 2023-2024 school year. Voting aye: Nordby, Schwager, Thiele, Thiele, Twibell, Wagner. Nay: none. Motion carried, 6-0.

Motion by Schwager, seconded by Nordby, to approve a contract to Jordyn Kuhl as a special education teacher for the 2023-2024 school year. Voting aye: Nordby, Schwager, Thiele, Thiele, Twibell, Wagner. Nay: none. Motion carried, 6-0.

Discuss, consider and take all necessary action on Policy 5052, school wellness. Finke reviewed the school wellness policy. Motion by Twibell, seconded by Wagner, to approve the review of Policy 5052, School Wellness, as presented. Voting aye: Nordby, Schwager, Thiele, Thiele, Twibell, Wagner. Nay: none. Motion carried, 6-0.

Discussion on the 2023-2024 school calendar. Finke presented the proposed 2023-2024 school calendar. He will tweak a couple things and present it to the staff. The final calendar will be presented at the April board meeting for approval.

Discuss strategic planning meeting. Discussion was held concerning a date for the strategic planning meeting. The first meeting will be Monday, March 27, 2023, at 6 p.m., at Summerland Public School.

NASB update. Finke reported on the NRCSA legislative update he recently attended.

Administrative reports. Elementary principal Cathy Cooper reported on curriculum, MTSS, Schoolstore, Dr. Seuss Read Across America Week, Monday Motivation.

High school principal Greg Appleby reported on winter sports, spring sports, quiz bowl, state speech, Class C All-State Band, FFA, graduation, National Honor Society, testing and prom.

Finke reported on contracts, mowing, NRCSA conference and job fairs.

Staffing. Motion by Steve Thiele, seconded by Schwager, to enter executive session at 7:30 p.m., and is necessary to protect the reputation of individuals. Voting aye: Nordby, Schwager, Thiele, Thiele, Twibell, Wagner. Nay: none. Motion carried, 6-0.

The board came out of executive session at 8:45 p.m.

The next regular meeting will be Monday, April 17, 2023, at 5:30 p.m. President Steve Thiele adjourned the meeting at 8:45 p.m.
