Olivan entertains at West Holt speech invite

Fourteen members of the Summerland speech team competed at the West Holt Invitational on Saturday, coming in seventh of 18 teams.

Earning top honors in entertainment speaking was Yulianna (Julie) Olivan, who earned a first-place rating from both judges in preliminary rounds and also from both judges in the final round. She earned 197 of a possible 200 rating points.

Other medal winners were as follows:

Faith King, fourth, poetry interpretation;

Olga Mendoza, fourth, serious prose and sixth, poetry interpretation;

Talya Nilson, Adrienne Parker, Brynna Umphress and Aubrey Parker, sixth, oral interpretation of drama.

One place out of the medal round and coming in ninth place were Brandon Pruden in humorous prose; King in informative speaking; Alanna Doll and Olivan in duet acting; and Irelyn Bearinger, Brandon Pruden, Yazlin Zermeno, Carlee Livingston and Sydni McConnell in oral interpretation of drama.

Earning superior ratings were Adrienne Parker in persuasive speaking, along with Bearinger and Nilson in duet acting.

Also competing were Livingston in entertainment speaking; Zermeno in humorous prose, and Leah Wiese in novice serious prose.

The Bobcat speechsters travel to Wausa on Saturday and on Wednesday, Feb. 15, they will host the Niobrara Valley Conference Speech Tournament.

The NVC meet will begin at 9 a.m., according to coach Julie Harley.
