Summerland's girls wrestling program shows improvement
Ranked wrestlers from across the state converged on Central Community College in Columbus, Thursday, for the Norm Manstedt Invite.
Raina Krebs topped the field in the 235-pound class. She pinned Belle Brodersen, BOCE, in 3:11 and in the quarterfinal, went nearly three rounds before pinning Claire Hemberger, of Adams Central, in 5:33. Krebs competed against Precious DeCora, of Winnebago, in the semifinal and won, by fall, in 4:29. In the championship match, Krebs pinned Brythany Espino, of Grand Island, in 4:41.
Ammy Arroyo claimed the bronze medal in the 190-pound division. After an opening loss to Ali Edwards, of Grand Island, by fall, in 2:33, the Summerland junior worked her way back through the consolation bracket.
She defeated Hannah Ogan, of Lake, by fall, in 2:11 and gained a second win when Darian Earth, of Winnebago, took a medical forfeit. Arroyo eliminated York's Annsley Vernon, by fall, in 2:06 and won by medical forfeit, against Marian Eckert, of Pierce, in the third-place match.
Three Bobcats participated in junior varsity competition.
Jadyn Hobbs brought home the silver medal in the 140-pound division. In the first round, she pinned Jocelyn Russman, Wisner-Pilger, in :57 and defeated David City's Jazmine Palencia, by fall, in 2:35 in the semifinal.
In the championship match, Hobbs lost, by fall, to Isabella Rivera, Northwest. Rivera pinned the Summerland wrestler in 1:32.
Emma Petersson competed in the 170-pound class. She opened with a win, by fall, in 1:15, over Shaylee Gardner, of Pierce, before being sent to the consolation round after dropping a 10-6 decision to Kylee Allen, Arcadia/Loup City, in the quarterfinal.
Petersson earned three pins while working through the consolation bracket. She pinned GI's Jackelyn Garcia, in :51; Isabella Guzman, Bellevue East, in 1:34 and Thea Wahl, of Adams Central, in :51. Petersson forfeited the third-place match to Kylee Allen, ALC.
Ashley Melcher forfeited an opening-round match against Boone Central's Kaylee Krohn. In the consolation bracket, Melcher forfeited to Alanna Mckeown, of Pierce and was eliminated from competition.
Summerland finished 15th in the field of 49 teams, scoring 53 points.
Grand Island won the team title and Minden finished second.
