Summerland SCHOOL BOARD OF EDUCATION

Sept. 14, 2022

Summerland School Board of Education held a regular meeting, Wednesday, Sept. 14, 2022, at the school. President Ed Nordby opened the meeting, which was advertised in the Sept. 7, 2022, papers, at 7:40 p.m., following the budget hearing. He noted the Open Meetings Act poster posted in the board room.

Roll call was taken at 7:30 p.m. Members present: Candice Hoke, Marty Kerkman, Nordby, Nate Schwager, Steve Thiele and Jeremy Wagner.

Motion by Thiele, seconded by Hoke, to approve the agenda as presented. Voting aye: Hoke, Kerkman, Nordby, Schwager, Thiele, Wagner. Nay: none. Motion carried 6-0.

Public participation was heard.

Motion by Nordby, seconded by Thiele, to approve the consent agenda items, with the exception of the bill to Hausmann Construction, in the amount of $55,990.32. Voting aye: Hoke, Kerkman, Nordby, Schwager, Thiele, Wagner. Nay: none. Motion carried 6-0.

Motion by Nordby, seconded by Kerkman, to approve the Hausmann Construction bill for $55,990.32. Voting aye: Hoke, Kerkman, Nordby, Schwager, Wagner. Nay: none. Abstain: Thiele (with conflict). Motion carried 5-0-1.

Unless removed from the consent agenda, items identified within the consent agenda will be acted on at one time: minutes of the Aug. 16, 2022, meeting and monthly financial report.

Old business:

Discuss, consider and take all necessary action on the sale of vans. Supt. Finke presented the bids received for the vans. Motion by Thiele, seconded by Hoke, to approve the bid from Commercial Bus & Vehicle, LLC, in the amount of $4,152, for all four vans. Voting aye: Hoke, Kerkman, Nordby, Schwager, Thiele, Wagner. Nay: none. Motion carried 6-0.

Discuss, consider and take all necessary action on the Ewing building. Supt. Finke presented the bids received for the Ewing property. Motion by Kerkman, seconded by Jeremy Wagner, to accept the bid for the Ewing property from Dustin Wright for $50,000. Voting aye: Hoke, Kerkman, Nordby, Schwager, Thiele, Wagner. Nay: none. Motion carried 6-0.

Discuss, consider and take all necessary action concerning the use of the facility. Supt. Finke presented a proposed Use of Facility Agreement. The board made some recommendations for additions/changes.

Motion by Thiele, seconded by Wagner, to approve the proposed Use of Facility Agreement with suggested changes. Voting aye: Hoke, Kerkman, Nordby, Schwager, Thiele, Wagner. Nay: none. Motion carried 6-0.

New business:

Discuss, consider and take all necessary action on landscaping items around the track and Summerland School sign. Supt. Finke presented proposed landscaping and sod bid information.

Motion by Schwager, seconded by Hoke, to approve the landscaping/sod project, not to exceed $15,000. Voting aye: Hoke, Kerkman, Nordby, Schwager, Thiele, Wagner. Nay: none. Motion carried 6-0.

NASB update. Supt. Finke reported about the upcoming state conference.

Administrative reports. Cathy Cooper, elementary principal reported on Acadience testing, NSCAS Growth/MAP Growth testing, elementary in-service, federally-funded fruits and vegetables program, kindergarten report card, MTSS, Ag Safety Week, emergency drills.

Greg Appleby, high school principal, reported on MAP testing, bus evacuation, tornado and fire drills and activities.

Supt. Finke reported on county tax request hearing, information on the student incident.

A discussion was held following these reports concerning school safety.

The next meeting will be a special meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 27, 2022, at 6 p.m.

The next regular meeting will be Monday, Oct. 17, at 5 p.m.

President Nordby adjourned the meeting at 9:14 p.m.
