Haskell Agriculture Laboratory celebrating 65 years, plans field day

About a mile and one-half east of Concord, in the rolling hills of Dixon County, is the Haskell Agriculture Laboratory or HAL. HAL, owned by the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, is where agricultural research projects are being put to the test on the land. On Wednesday, Aug. 3, all are invited to take a look at what HAL has to offer, visit with experts and ask agriculture-related questions during the Science and Ag Family Field Day. Events will start at 9 a.m. and continue until 3 p.m. Registration will start at 8:30 a.m.

The day will begin with an opening ceremony, consisting of coffee and donuts, with Dr. Charlie Stoltenow, dean of Nebraska Extension through the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

After the opening ceremony, vendors, events, tours, and talks will take place throughout the day. Free water stations will be situated throughout HAL.

Vouchers for food trucks will be given out at the registration table. This is a family event so bring the kids for children's activities.

Planned activities include meeting the Heartland Docs, Drs. Ben and Erin Schroeder; listening to Al Dutcher, UNL climatologist, who will talk about the remainder of the growing season and provide a harvest outlook; meet with a Backyard Farmer panel, tour ongoing projects and the Northeast Arboretum.

What is this arboretum tour and what is an arboretum? Glad you asked.

An arboretum is a tree museum where different trees are planted, grown and identified with a plaque. Trees and shrubs are showcased for people to learn how to identify different trees, determine what species will work best in their yard and for school children to understand the benefits of trees.

Tours of the Northeast Arboretum will be a walking tour to highlight several species and provide basic tree facts that will come in handy when trying to impress friends and family!

New this year will be a blood drive to help the critical state of America's blood banks, which are experiencing extremely low levels. Individuals interested in donating may do so in the mobile donation bus. Just remember to drink plenty of water before donating.
