Summerland School Board of Education held a regular meeting, Tuesday, May 17, 2022, at Summerland School.

President Ed Nordby called the meeting, which was advertised in the May 11 papers, to order at 7:02 p.m. Nordby noted the Open Meetings Act posted in the room.

Roll call was taken. Present: Candice Hoke, Marty Kerkman, Nordby, Nate Schwager, Steve Thiele and Jeremy Wagner. All board members were present.

Motion by Wagner, seconded by Kerkman, to approve the agenda as presented. Voting aye: Hoke, Kerkman, Nordby, Schwager, Thiele, Wagner. Nay: none. Motion carried 6-0.

Public participation was heard.

Motion by Thiele, seconded by Hoke, to approve the consent agenda items, including the minutes of the April 12, 2022, meeting and monthly financial report. Voting aye: Hoke, Kerkman, Nordby, Schwager, Thiele, Wagner. Nay: none. Motion carried 6-0.

Old business. Discuss, consider and take all necessary action on the Ewing building. Motion by Schwager, seconded by Wagner, to enter executive session at 7:55 p.m., and is necessary to discuss the possible sale of real estate and property. Voting aye: Hoke, Kerkman, Nordby, Schwager, Thiele, Wagner. Nay: none. Motion carried 6-0.

The board came out of executive session at 8:24 p.m.

New business. Discuss, consider and take all necessary action to approve a teacher contract. Brett Kaczor has entered the transition-to-teach program through the University of Nebraska at Kearney. He currently has a business degree and will be working toward obtaining his teaching certification.

Motion by Schwager, seconded by Kerkman, to approve a teaching contract to Brett Kaczor, contingent upon receiving his provisional certificate, for the 2022-2023 school year. Voting aye: Hoke, Kerkman, Nordby, Schwager, Thiele, Wagner. Nay: none. Motion carried 6-0.

Discuss, consider and take all necessary action on OTTIS service agreement for the elevator. Superintendent Kyle Finke presented the proposed service contract and recommended that the board approve the contract with OTTIS to regularly service the elevator, as presented. The board agreed to get approval for service contracts, in the future, through the Building and Grounds Committee. Motion by Schwager, seconded by Hoke, to approve the service agreement for the elevator. Voting aye: Hoke, Kerkman, Nordby, Schwager, Thiele, Wagner. Nay: none. Motion carried 6-0.

Discuss, consider and take all necessary action on the curriculum material obsolete list. Motion by Thiele, seconded by Schwager, to declare curriculum materials presented as obsolete. Voting aye: Hoke, Kerkman, Nordby, Schwager, Thiele, Wagner. Nay: none. Motion carried 6-0.

Superintendent evaluation. Motion by Wagner, seconded by Kerkman, to discuss the evaluation of the superintendent and is necessary to protect the reputation of an individual. Voting aye: Hoke, Kerkman, Nordby, Schwager, Thiele, Wagner. Nay: none. Motion carried 6-0.

The board came out of executive session at 9:57 p.m.

Discuss, consider and take all necessary action on approving a superintendent contract. No action was taken.

NASB update. Finke gave a brief update on English Language Learners.

Administrative reports:

Elementary Principal Cathy Cooper reported on curriculum, MTSS, elementary summer reading, PK and kindergarten parent meetings, preschool graduation, field trips and elementary track and field day.

High School Principal Greg Appleby reported on graduation, state track, junior/senior high school academic awards, athletic banquet, sixth-grade transition day and summer athletic activities.

Supt. Finke reported on Northern Tier visitation, lease agreement with Eakes for new copiers, Aptegy soft launch, meeting with Building and Grounds Committee and transportation needs.

The next regular board meeting will be Tuesday, June 14, 2022, at 7:30 p.m.

President Nordby adjourned the meeting at 10:01 p.m.
