The Bobcats opened the 2021 campaign with a 12-6 win over Elkhorn Valley. The teams met under the lights in Orchard on Friday.
Head Coach Tom Thramer said his squad did some good things, especially defensively.
"On offense, we have to do a better job of hanging on to the ball, finishing blocks and, especially finishing drives when we are inside the 20-yard line," he said.
Junior Trevor Thomson rushed for 180 yards on 22 carries to set the tone for the Bobcats.
He also nabbed a pass for a 16- yard gain.
Senior quarterback Mason Hoke, who was injured in the game, finished with four completions on nine attempts.
Hoke's status for Friday's contest against St. Mary's is unknown at this time.
Thramer said, "Mason is day to day so we don't know if he will be available on Friday."
Thirteen Bobcats finished the game on the defense's stat sheet.
Wyatt Chipps led Summerland with eight tackles, included four solo takedowns.
Thomson, Hoke, Dillon Moser, Colton Thiele and Logan Mueller each finished with six tackles.
Thiele and Mueller each added a tally in the quarterback sack category, totaling a loss of 21 yards, collectively.
The Bobcats grabbed three interceptions.
Ty Rix found the ball and picked up a gain of 15 yards.
Thomson's interception led to a 12-yard gain. Kendrick Schroeder picked off the Falcon's quarterback and added eight yards to the Bobcat cause.
On special teams, Gaby Mendoza booted three kickoffs for 150 yards. He also sailed a punt for 40 yards.
Thomson scored both of the Bobcat touchdowns.
Thramer said he told players he was "extremely proud" ofthem for fighting through adversity when they could have easily
laid down and quit.
"That showed a lot of character from those young men," he said.
This Friday, at 3 p.m., Summerland travels to O'Neill to meet the St. Mary's Cardinals.
Thramer said the Redbirds have a really nice team and "a real weapon" in Aiden Hedstrom.
"We are going to have to be able to control the line of scrimmage better come Friday so we can open some nice running lanes and be able to hit some play action passes," Thramer said.
