Summerland Public School Board of Education met in regular session, Tuesday, Aug. 17, 2021, at the Orchard site. President Nordby called the meeting, which was advertised in the Aug. 11 newspapers, to order at 7 p.m. Nordby noted the Open Meetings Act poster in the room.
Roll call was taken. Present: Candice Hoke, Marty Kerkman, Ed Nordby, Nate Schwager, Steven Thiele, Jeremy Wagner. Absent: none.
Motion by Thiele, seconded by Hoke, to approve the agenda as presented.
Voting aye: Hoke, Kerkman, Nordby, Schwager, Thiele, Wagner. Nay: none. Motion carried 6-0.
Public participation. No public participation was heard.
Motion by Thiele, seconded by Kerkman, to approve the consent agenda items, with the exception of the Hausmann Construction bill in the amount of $1,208,943.71. Voting aye: Hoke, Kerkman, Nordby, Schwager, Thiele, Wagner. Nay: none. Motion carried 6-0.
Motion by Schwager, seconded by Hoke, to approve the Hausmann construction bill in the amount of $1,208,943.71. Voting aye: Hoke, Kerkman, Nordby, Schwager, Wagner. Nay: none. Abstain: Thiele. Motion carried 5-0-1 (with conflict).
Minutes of the July 12 meeting and monthly financial rep were included in the consent agenda.
Old business:
Building construction update: Superintendent Finke reported that the rooms necessary to go ahead and begin the moving process are ready.
The move will begin Monday, Aug. 23, as planned.
Brian, a representative from Olsson Engineering, was present to discuss the water-retention site at the new building.
Orchard building information:
Jacob Sertich from Wilkins Architecture was present via Zoom to discuss their proposal for the demolition of the older portion of the Orchard building. Motion by Schwager, seconded by Hoke, to accept the bid proposal from Wilkins Architecture.
Voting aye: Hoke, Kerkman, Nordby, Schwager, Thiele, Wagner. Nay: none. Motion carried 6-0.
New business:
Return to Learn Plan for 2021- 2022: Supt. Finke talked about the Return to Learn Plan for 2021-2022. He also reported on information he had received from the North Central District Health Department.
Review, consider and take all necessary action on approving work agreements for additional paras and transportation drivers. Motion by Schwager, seconded by Thiele, to approve a work agreement for transportation to Marcus Hobbs.
Voting aye: Hoke, Kerkman, Nordby, Schwager, Thiele, Wagner. Nay:none. Motion carried 6-0. Motion by Hoke, seconded by Schwager, to approve a work agreement for transportation to Greg Ramold.

Motion by Schwager, seconded by Kerkman, to approve a work agreement for a paraprofessional to Denise Napier. Voting aye: Hoke, Kerkman, Nordby, Schwager, Thiele, Wagner. Nay: none. Motion carried 6-0.

Review superintendent goals.
Supt. Finke presented the board with his goals for the year and details about how he will attain these goals.
Review, consider and take all necessary action on 2021-2022 NRCSA membership. Motion by Thiele, seconded by Schwager, to renew membership in NRCSA for the 2021-2022 school year.
Voting aye: Hoke, Kerkman, Nordby, Schwager, Thiele, Wagner. Nay: none. Motion carried 6-0.
Update on the budget process.
Supt. Finke reported on the work that has been done on the 2021-2022 budget. The finance committee will meet Monday, Aug. 30, at 5 at the Summerland School to finalize the budget.
NASB update. Supt. Finke and board president Nordby attended a NASB meeting in Lincoln. Supt. Finke also attended a new superintendent meeting presented by NASB in Milford.
Administrative reports. Principal Appleby reported on preparations done for school to start, activities and practices and public acknowledge the donations made by community groups for the football headset system.
Principal Cooper reported on production work days (building relationships), working on elementary specials schedule, moving days and administrator days.
Supt. Finke reported on details for the move on Monday and Tuesday.
He will be attending several meetings next week, the open house for students and parents on Aug. 29 and the burger bash.
The next meeting date will be Monday, Sept. 13, 2021, at Summerland Public School. There will be a budget hearing at 6 p.m., followed by a tax-request hearing and then the regular meeting. Nordby adjourned the meeting at 8:43 p.m.
