Debra F. Jordan, 54 of Norfolk faced the Honorable Donna Taylor last Wednesday for a preliminary hearing on a felony burglary charge. Court was delayed about 15 minutes, awaiting Jordan’s transport to the courtroom from the county jail.
Tilden police chief Robert Peterson was called to the witness stand by Antelope County prosecutor Joe Abler and was asked to review his investigation of July 14 crimes alleged at Jordan’s place of employment, JB Mart in Tilden.
A Nebraska State Patrol investigator, Brad Higgins, had been present in the courtroom but was not called to testify. Taylor found sufficient evidence for the case to proceed and bound Jordon over to the Antelope County district court on the burglary charge.
Her first district court appearance is set Aug. 25. A Class 1 misdemeanor count of theft by unlawful taking was dismissed to be refiled in district court.
Jordan’s court-appointed attorney, Melissa Figueroa requested bond be reduced to $5,000, telling the judge that the defendant would lose her Norfolk apartment if she didn’t return home by Aug.10. A bond review hearing was held, with Abler objecting to any further reduction.
He stated bond had already been reduced once, over his objection.
“She’s breaking the law while on probation anyway,” he said.
“I don’t know if that’s indication of how she will respond to bond conditions.”
Taylor questioned Jordan regarding probation in Madison County, Jordan responded she would be done this month.
Taylor then ordered bond remain at $10,000, 10% cash, as set July 21, telling Jordan she would have a different judge in district court. Jordan was remanded to the custody of Antelope County sheriff Moore, pending posting of bond.
Jordan was arrested July 15 in Norfolk, following an investigation into an alleged theft of two envelopes containing $1,127 from a safe at JB Mart after the business closed the night before.
The alleged crime was captured by a security camera.
