Clearwater event named best of 2020

Despite being pushed back two weeks and having health precautions in place, not even a pandemic could prevent Clearwater’s Big Rodeo from taking place in 2020, drawing competitors from across Nebraska and seven other states.

Mid-States Rodeo Association members recognized Clearwater’s 53rd Big Rodeo as 2020 Rodeo of the Year.

Chamber members received the award, Sunday, in Broken Bow, at the conclusion of the Mid-States Finals Rodeo.

Rodeo chairman Gene Snodgrass said it is the 10th time Clearwater has won the award. The chamber was named top show in 1978, 1979, 1980, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1985, 1986, 1987 and 1988.

Clearwater Chamber president Curt Thiele said, “Even if only half the rodeos happened this year, it’s an honor to get this award.”

Twenty-nine events took place this year. Several rodeos were canceled as a result of directed health measures in place, due to coronavirus.

Members of the MSRA determine winners, casting votes in nine categories, including announcer, secretary, time, judge, pick up man, bullfighter, time event contractor and rough stock contractor.

Hollenbeck Rodeo Company, of Winner, South Dakota, received rough stock contractor of the year. They have supplied stock to Clearwater’s event for 42 years.

Lane Day, of Bartlett, received the all-around men’s award, earning $8,530.23 this season. He participates in Clearwater’s event.
