Three lifters set records at state games

Seven Summerland powerlifters traveled to Lincoln Saturday, July 18, for the Cornhusker State Games.

Coach Jeff Shabram said, "It was a different feel to be in Lincoln for the state games this year as there were no opening ceremonies or athlete march, but everyone was excited just to have the chance to compete."

The powerlifting championships were held at Lincoln Christian High School. It was a sanctioned AAU meet.

Numerous state and national records set by adult and teen lifters.

According to Shabram, this was a nice-sized meet, with 80 lifters participating, and a full lineup of extremely stiff competition from around Nebraska.

"The Summerland lifters were up for the challenge and represented our team and school very well," Shabram said.

All Bobcat lifters medaled gold or silver in their respective age/weight class.

Also, three Summerland school records were broken.

Trevor Thomson set a new record with a deadlift of 441 pounds and total 926 pounds.

Rafe Grebin set a new record with a strength index, which is total lifted divided by body weight, of 5.88.

The Summerland powerlifting Team finished in second place.

Columbus Scotus claimed the top spot, scoring 100 points. Summerland tallied 64. Finishing in the top five were Testify Strength - Omaha, BK powerlifting - Lincoln and Lincoln Club.

Larissa Thomson earned gold in the 123-pound raw class; Wyatt Shabram topped the 97-pound equipped class in full meet, bench and ironman; Connor Thomson finished first in the 105-pound raw class; Grebin, first in the 132-pound raw class and Gunnar Shabram, first, 198-pound equipped class in full meet, bench and ironman.

Silver medalists included Trevor Thomson, 165-pound raw class and Jeff Shabram, 220-pound raw master class, full meet and bench.

The powerlifting season will officially begin for the 2020-21 season, Saturday, Dec. 5, with the Lexington High School powerlifting Meet.
