Thomson wins top lifter award

Summerland powerlifters compete at Peru State Championships

Nine lifters from the Summerland powerlifting team traveled to Peru State College, Saturday, for the Peru State powerlifting Championships.

Coach Jeff Shabram said it was a large meet, with 170 lifters competing, offering a lineup of very stiff "big school" competition from around the state, along with one Iowa school.

Bobcat lifters had a tough day ahead of them, competing as one of the smallest schools, but were up for the challenge.

Shabram said, "We can be very proud of the way our students competed and conducted themselves in representing our school and communities."

Summerland's coed team finished fifth.

The top five team standings included first, Lexington; second, Columbus Scotus; third, Omaha Skutt Catholic and fourth, Woodward Academy - Iowa.

Lexington High School also won the boys' and girls' team divisions, with Omaha Skutt named the boys' team runner-up. Woodward Academy received the girls runner-up award.

Other schools competing included Lincoln High, Columbus Lakeview, Omaha Gross Catholic, Yutan, Lutheran High Northeast and Johnson-Brock.

The Bobcats had one individual gold medal winner. Larissa Thomson claimed the girl's 123-pound class.

Larissa's total of 615 pounds, lifted at a body weight of 119.5, earned her the overall female lifter of the meet award, based on strength index, which is weight lifted divided by body weight.

"This is Larissa's second meet in a row, and fourth meet overall, in which she has earned this prestigious award," Shabram said.

Four other individuals earned medals.

Wyatt Shabram finished fourth in the 114-pound division; Connor Thomson, fifth, 114; Jacob Behnk, fifth, 220-pound class and Riley Fisher, fourth, 275-pound class.

Other boys who competed were Trevor Thomson, seventh, 165; Gunnar Shabram, ninth, 181 and Gaven Gilsdorf, 19th, 181.

In the girls' division, Savanna Ferris competed in the 148-pound class and ended 10th.

According to Shabram, all nine lifters competed hard and set numerous personal bests.

The next powerlifting meet on the schedule will be the Midland College powerlifting Meet, Feb. 8 in Fremont.

This is a new meet added to the schedule.

The team will not attend the Omaha South meet, listed for March 7 on the school calendar.

Other notable dates include Friday, March 27, Class D State Meet at Harvard High School and the Orchard AAU powerlifting meet, set for April 4.

On July 18, team members will compete in the Cornhusker State Games powerlifting Meet.
