The Summerland Lady Bobcats move to 6-1 on the season with a solid 60-54 win over the Class D2 top-rated and previously undefeated Humphrey St. Francis team and their star point guard, D-1 recuit and UNL commit Allison Weidner.
The Lady Bobcats started slow, down 16-3 after one quarter of play, but turned it up in the second quarter, outscoring HSF 18-10, to get back in the game at halftime only trailing 26-21.
In the third quarter, the Lady Bobcats outscored HSF 17-13 to make it a one-point lead going into the final quarter.
Summerland Coach Greg Appleby said HSF had a little run to start the fourth quarter and take an 8-point lead, but the Bobcats would not quit. They scored 22 points in the final eight minutes to come away with the big win.
Ashley Koenig led the Bobcats with 22 points and 8 rebounds. Sidney Stallbaum added 17 points and nabbed 8 rebounds.
Tiana Thramer popped in four 3-point shots and grabbed six rebounds, while Brenna Wagner dished 7 assists, hit 9 points and pulled down 10 rebounds.
"Summer Schroeder, Avery Cheatum and Madleen Repein guarded and harassed Allison Weidner all night long and were keys to the victory without scoring a point," Appleby said. "Without their great job, we would not have been in the ballgame."
Appleby applauded his team's grit and battling back.
"You could see our confidence and belief grow throughout that ballgame. HSF is really good and Weidner is a big-time stud, but we were able to stick to the defensive game plan and get some stops when we needed them, and hit some big shots down the stretch. Tiana Thramer's 3-pointer to make a 3-point lead grow to 6 was a dagger.
