Members of Summerland Public School's FFA chapter got first-hand experience in forestry, Monday, Oct. 2. Students added 10 new trees to school property, near the FFA corn test plot and track-and-field areas. The trees are part of the Ten Free Trees Progam, an effort of the Nebraska Forest Service and the Nebraska Statewide Arboretum. Area residents got a glimpse at the Summerland FFA test plot, Aug. 30, at Napier Farms near Ewing. One highlight of the plot was Preceon Smart Corn System. According to Mike Podany, of Clarkson, the short-stature corn system looks at how to evaluate population while driving yield and managing green snap. Corn in the Summerland FFA test plot was sky high by the Fourth of July. Some of the rows shot toward the sun, towering over other varieties. Summerland FFA members watch as a sample is taken from a corn hybrid picked on the FFA test plot, located at Napier Farms, north of the school. Last spring, hybrids from Pioneer, Channel, NC+, Golden Harvest, Brevant, and DeKalb were planted. A test plot event was held last month.
