At first glance, the Clearwater Veterans Park, located at the intersection of Main and Nebraska streets, pays homage to those who served this country. Flags recognizing each military branch of service wave on the eastern side of a concrete walkway. A bright mural decorates the south wall of the library. A plaque, defining the term "veteran," is installed. Benches supply a place for visitors to sit and reflect. As of Sept. 11, two more pieces have been added: a battlefield cross and a soldier bea...
At first glance, the mural adorning the wall in the Bunker Bar, inside the newly-remodeled Clearwater Legion, looks familiar. Artist Shannon Schumacher of Clearwater said there are slight differences to the original version he painted nearly a decade ago. "The sky is different," he said. "And the arch of the bunker." When he first met with Clearwater Sons of the American Legion officials to discuss the original design, a bunker was mentioned. Schumacher drew inspiriation for the bunker from a...
The Chamber of Commerce building in downtown O'Neill showcases a vibrant new mural that celebrates the town's rich history and heritage. The mural, featuring iconic images such as General John O'Neill, the famous green horse, a shamrock and more, has been completed by local resident Claire Morrow, a 2019 O'Neill High School graduate and current kindergarten teacher at O'Neill Elementary School. Morrow views the mural project as a fantastic opportunity to leave her mark on the town she loves....
When you think of the word "veteran," who comes to mind? For many Clearwater residents, the term may be associated with a family member, a next-door neighbor or a teacher who bravely served this great nation. These veterans have earned undying gratitude for the sacrifices made. Last summer, a group of civic-minded residents began discussions to create a spot honoring area veterans. The first step: painting a mural on the south wall of the library on Aug. 19. That task was followed with...
Six flags, recognizing each branch of the U.S. military, flank the American stars and stripes on the eastern edge of Clearwater's newest addition, Veterans Park. A cement walkway is poured and will feature a granite monument with names of area heroes who took a piece of Clearwater to the war zone and, in some instances, made the selfless sacrifice. A mural featuring a solider covers the south wall of the Clearwater Public Library, establishing a backdrop for the area. Eventually, a statue of a...
I'm sure that a year ago the Revitalize Rural Nebraska Grant Program proposed by Sen. Myron Dorn of Adams and passed by the Legislature sounded like a great deal. Administered by the Department of Environment and Energy, it's intended to provide money to help towns under 5,000 populations with the cost of clearing away rundown buildings. Some consideration is allegedly given to historic properties. But there's nothing really being done to address the root cause of the dilapidation. Dorn's heart...
It started with an Elgin family’s bathtub, one that had been in the family for decades, and it led to a major new exhibit at the Antelope County Museum in Neligh that spotlights the important role water plays in the lives of every county resident. Jane Schuchardt of Elgin said as she contemplated getting rid of the clawfoot bathtub that had been in her husband Rick Schuchardt’s family for years, it occurred to her that it could be the basis of an exhibit focusing on the importance of water. Her...
Clearwater residents received a sneak peak of what the village's business district could look like, Nov. 8, during an open house at the American Legion. Bobbi Pettit, owner of Five Rule Rural Planning, along with other members of the planning team, shared concepts designed by architect Patrick Moore, an architect with Good Life Architecture, in Kearney; landscape architect Austin Arens, with RDG Planning & Design in Omaha; and John Zwingman, civil engineer with Advanced Consulting Engineering...
Sterling Legate and Melvin Ahlers, members of Clearwater American Legion Post 267, accept a check from Bill Kester, a Clearwater Sons of the Legion member. The Sons' donation will benefit the veterans' memorial park, specifically the mural painted on the south wall of the Clearwater Library. During Monday's Clearwater Village Board of Trustees' meeting, memorial organizers presented a detailed list of elements and ballpark figures for the total cost of the project. Plans feature flags...

A tribute to Clearwater-area veterans is one step closer to reality. Clearwater Board of Trustees gave approval to a group of residents, including members of the local American Legion and Auxiliary, who approached the board when it met in August, about renovating the area south of the public library and adding a veterans' memorial on the lot. Little did organizers know the artistic portion of the project would be complete within the week. On Aug. 19, Tilden artist Adam Boggs completed the first...
Student pride – and the graduation rate – are on the upswing at the public school on the Santee Native Reservation. School leaders trace that success to a new effort to teach students the tribe’s culture. For the first time, students are learning Santee Dakota history, language and customs – subjects long ago banned. The new cultural program has boosted attendance and helped the iSanti Community School in Niobrara hit a 100% graduation rate two years running, school leaders say. It hasn’t...
CORTLAND – It's five days before the big day. The Model A dashes down West Fourth Street. Its driver pulls up to a brick storefront and strolls inside, jaunty, dressed in his Sunday best. The black-and-white scene turns technicolor, like a Gage County "Pleasantville," as a brunette with cherry red lips leans in with a coffee pot and winks. Welcome to Paper Moon Pastries, the 1930s-style small-town bakery inspired by a classic movie – its public introduction captured by drone and iPhone. Tha...
A 45-mile cruise between Ewing, Orchard and Clearwater drew 15 teams to compete in the FunFest road rally, sponsored by the Summerland Advocate-Messenger and Ewing Young Members Club. Knowledge of each of the town's businesses and landmarks came in handy. A background in history may have been helpful, too, as several clues referred to the past. Having a lead foot didn't make a difference. Contestants simply needed to answer questions and snap photographs to document each stop. Stops along the...
