A new addition to the Summerland teaching staff was announced Monday. During the monthly board of education meeting, Danielle Birch, of O'Neill, was hired as a math instructor, for the 2023-2024 school year. Summerland School District will feature five new staff members in the 2021-2022 school year, including one elementary and four high school educators. A familiar face will return to the Summerland district for the 2021-2022 school year Krista Holliday, former science instructor at Ewing Public Schools, will return to the classroom. Holliday will replace Mary Leisy, who has accepted a position at Atkinson West Holt Public Schools. Principal Greg Appleby said Holliday is "excited to come back and work as our science teacher." Six members of the Orchard original and advisory boards of education, meeting jointly at the high school last Tuesday evening, heard that five compressors in the Trane HVAC system had failed the previous month. A timeline for replacement was not available. Orchard school board members took no official action, other than consent agenda items when they met in the high school business room Wednesday, Feb. 4. Orchard principal Cathy Cooper told board members negotiations with the teachers’ association had been completed, with the 2020-2021 base salary for Summerland teachers set at $35,000. Currently Unified teacher base is $34,700 and Ewing’s is $35,000.
