When John Neligh, William B. Lambert and John B. Thomson viewed the sprawling Elkhorn Valley, near present-day Neligh, in 1873, they could not have imagined how the original 500-acre tract would develop into a sprawling city, intersected by two major highways. After 150 years, the intersection of old and new will merge, as Neligh residents celebrate the city's sesquicentennial. While a handful of events are scheduled for Thursday and Friday, the bulk of activities will take place Saturday, July...

It started when her dad, Nick, lost his iPhone, which spilled into the frozen lake. "It's out there in the lake with the fishies," Nick said. The family would have...

Forty-one teams entered the five-hour event, Sunday, at Grove Lake. Royal Fire Chief Gary Ober said it's "great" to have a large number of teams participate and be back on the ice. This year has been extremely hard on small-town fire departments. Within the past two months alone, the Royal Volunteer Fire Department has responded to six calls in the area. On a brighter note, department members recently received exciting news: They are now the proud new owners of another fire truck. On Nov. 2, the Bloomfield Rural Fire District, opened bids on a 1999 GMC Topkick 7500 Midwest Pumping Unit fire truck. Royal firefighters, with the help of the Orchard Rural Fire Board,...
