  • Out my garden window

    Bev Wieler|Jun 23, 2022

I love the sound of a sprinkler on the garden. The spit, spit, spit of water lets me know the day will warm up, corn will continue to grow in the fields and my garden will also thrive and surprise me with new blooms. It’s summer in Nebraska. Looking out my kitchen window, I can’t help but gaze a bit longer at some head turners. Pops of flowers, when in full bloom, are head turners. As the month of June unfolds, there were not enough peonies in my life. The early head turners are done and it’s ti...

  • -Isms: Views on life in rural America

    LuAnn Schindler, Publisher|May 21, 2020

Some of the best gifts received from family didn’t cost anything, except time. Memories of baking in both grandmothers’ kitchens still flood to mind every time I try a new recipe or attempt to roll pie crust to an acceptable thickness. P.S. Grandma Fields, I’m still trying to master that skill. Frozen pie crusts are so much easier but do not taste a quarter as good as yours. When I watch baseball, I’m back in Wausa, walking to the ballfield with Dad and Grandma, waiting for the town team to take...

  • Holt County leaders address road-use agreements

    Sandy Schroth, Editor|Feb 20, 2020

The Holt County supervisors spent nearly two hours at a meeting last week, reviewing a road-haul agreement brought to the table by TC Energy representatives last October, paragraph by paragraph, despite having a new agreement drafted by Dave Domina in hand. The scrutiny came after Holt County attorney Brent Kelly presented a preliminary agreement drafted by the Omaha attorney who was hired by the county officials on a 4-2 vote Oct. 31, 2019, to negotiate a road-haul agreement with TC Energy. At Kelly’s suggestion, the supervisors held an execut...

  • Out My Kitchen Window

    Bev Wieler|Sep 5, 2019

I love sitting outside looking over my garden and am usually wearing a smile. I do have complaints in life and probably the biggest is not enough gardening programs on television or printed articles sharing Nebraska flower gardens. I'm Bev Wieler and my husband and I are nestled in the countryside of rural Nebraska, sharing the hobby of gardening. No matter what season it is we have found ways to splash color in the flower bed situated out our back door and luckily for us, outside our kitchen...
