First of all, thank you for giving me the opportunity to address your group about the proposed planning commission changes. I thought we had killed this a while back and would not hear from the commission until they had a complete plan that had been thoroughly vetted. I have been on quite a few boards in my life. I can appreciate that you are doing what you think is best. I would ask you to consider an additional point of view. • I had a conversation at Elgin a few years back, that sounded like what I believe is happening again here, now. I w...

Following executive session, which lasted approximately 15 minutes, audie...
Talk about sticker shock. Imagine my surprise a few days ago as I grabbed a carton of eggs from the cold case at the local store: $7.45 for a dozen large eggs. Usually, grandson Jorden supplies eggs, fresh from the poultry pen, but his supply was depleted. Needless to say, I changed my menu plan and returned the carton to the shelf. Accordng to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the Consumer Price Index has seen an 8.2% increase in the last year. Electricity prices shock a lot of us, with a...

Both will be seniors at their respective schools. It has been a joy working with Faith King and Erin Schwager this summer. Erin joined the paper the day before our first edition debuted in 2019. Summer is in full swing and with that comes cookouts and gatherings where food is featured. As you plan your menu, keep local farmers in mind. Buying locally-produced food strengthens the local economy. According to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, on average, every $100 spent at a locally-owned business results in $45 flowing back into the local community. This is much higher than the $14 that stays in the community when we spend our $100 at a business that isn’t locally owned. More c...

REP. ADRIAN SMITH The importance of a strong agriculture economy to the state of Nebraska and our entire nation cannot be overstated. Often overlooked in policy conversations, products supplied by farmers and ranchers are fundamental to fueling our lives, filling our plates, putting shirts on our backs and so much more. Yet, American ag producers currently face a bevy of historic crises which threaten their livelihoods and the long-term health of our economy. This comes at a time when relief for Americans suffering because of inflation and the...

This spring we celebrated 7,200 new graduates of the University of Nebraska – new Husker, Maverick, Loper and UNMC alumni who are future leaders of our state. It’s one of my favorite times of year. Commencement brings to life the fundamental reason why public higher education exists: To create opportunities for students to build a better future for themselves and the world around them. Each graduating class of the University of Nebraska transforms our state in ways that are impossible to qua...

It’s easy to think of entrepreneurship as glamorous. “You get to be your own boss! Choose your hours! Run things your way! Be passionate about your work!” And then, as those big dreams start setting in, so do the realities and fears of risk. “What if I don’t bring in the revenue? Where will I find the startup funds? How do I even know where to begin? What about health insurance?” Entrepreneurship is hard. It’s messy. It’s a grind, especially at the beginning. And it can often be quite lonely. But the reality is that we need more entreprene...
