Antelope County’s annual audit report was released by the Nebraska auditor of public accounts office early this month. Auditors once again advised segregation of duties for the county, overall. The NPA recommended officials weigh the cost to hire additional personnel against the benefit of segregating duties. A Wednesday evening fire leaves an Orchard couple homeless after their residence, located at 405 E. 3rd Street, was destroyed. Orchard Fire Chief Duane Risinger said the department received an emergency call for a structure fire, Nov. 4, around 11 p.m. Royal Fire Department also responded. The residents, Jim and Gladys Fink, were able to escape from the blaze. A mutual aid call was issued for departments from Brunswick, Ewing, Neligh and O'Neill. A weekend of family-friendly fun is on tap, July 24 through 26, in Orchard. Orchard’s annual community celebration begins Friday, with a drive-through chicken dinner planned at the Rex. The Holt County supervisors finalized seating of a board of adjustment when they met at the courthouse in O’Neill last Tuesday, June 30. Vice chair Steve Boshart presided, due to the potential for board of adjustment action related to TC Energy matters, with which chairman Bill Tielke has a declared conflict of interest. Orchard school board members took no official action, other than consent agenda items when they met in the high school business room Wednesday, Feb. 4. Orchard principal Cathy Cooper told board members negotiations with the teachers’ association had been completed, with the 2020-2021 base salary for Summerland teachers set at $35,000. Currently Unified teacher base is $34,700 and Ewing’s is $35,000. Candice Hoke of Orchard will join Nate Schwager to represent Orchard on the board of education for the new Summerland school district. The report covers July 2018 to June 2019, and includes numerous areas of concern for internal control that were listed in a letter sent to the county board of supervisors Sept. 10. Flooding forecasts along the Elkhorn River valley in Holt County have been upgraded from minor to moderate severity, according to the National Weather Service in North Platte. Moderate flooding upstream and downstream from Ewing is expected to continue through the weekend. At 7:45 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 12, the river measured 7.5 feet near Ewing. Flood stage is 9 feet.
