Summerland volleyball welcomes a new coach in the team’s sophomore season. Rachael Cheatum takes the helm for the Bobcats. The Summerland Bobcats finished second at the Eagle Classic, Oct. 19, at Lutheran High NE in Norfolk. The round-robin tourney began with Summerland sweep over Blair, in identical sets, 25-12. Summerland Volleyball Coach Suz Funk made history Saturday. When the Bobcats last kill landed on the West Holt floor, Funk picked up career win number 300. The 2019 season marks Funk's 16th year as a head coach, with 15 of those at the helm of the Ewing Tigers. Funk said her coaching days began at Clearwater, where she served as an assistant for Jan Troyer-Brummels, before joining the Tigers as an assistant for Anne Smith. The Summerland Bobcats claimed the Creighton volleyball invite title for the fourth straight time. Summerland downed Hartington/Newcastle, West Holt and the host squad, Sept. 14, giving Head Coach Suz Funk her 301st win after the final match. As the school year approaches, so does volleyball season. This year Clearwater, Orchard, and Ewing will form the Summerland Bobcats. The co-op causes the team to move from a Class D2 to a C2 team.
