Summerland School's music department will offer two holiday concerts on Monday, Dec. 11. At 6 p.m., kindergarten through sixth-grade students will present the annual Christmas play, under the direction of Sarah Kesting. The performance will take place in the main gym. Grades seven through 12 music students will present musical selections, beginning at 7:30 p.m., in the auxiliary gym. Even in the best of times, staging a live performance requires suspension of belief, pulling audience members into a mystical realm situated beyond the fourth wall. This year - 2020 - may be remembered as the worst of times for aspiring performers, as concerns about safety take center stage. Summerland School's play production team and coaches have learned to adapt to on- and off-stage challenges so the show may go on. During my 25-year stint as a play production director, I faced several challenges: kids late to practice, costume malfunctions, broken props, ill students requiring a substitution from an understudy. None of those tests equal what one-act directors are facing during the pandemic. Clearwater middle school musicians participated in the Wayne State Middle School Music Festival, March 10. Director Sarah Kesting reported the grades four through six choir earned a superior rating. It takes confidence to stand in front of a crowd and sing. It takes even more confidence to perform songs that challenge and push you to be a better performer.
