References to beekeeping have been found near Spain in archaic cave paintings, hieroglyphics in an Egyptian temple and at an Israeli archeological excavation, where an ancient apiary was uncovered, containing over 100 straw and clay hives. But it wasn’t until the early 1600s that European settlers introduced bees and beekeeping to the New England colonies. The immigrant honeybee that makes the Americas it’s home...

Individuals who have not filled out a paper questionnaire received via mail or taken the online 2020 census survey may want to spend 15 minutes filling out one of the forms. While the census counts the United States population, data from the questionnaire will also be used to make decisions about federal and state funding for programs that aid everyone. According to the Census Bureau, approximately $8 billion federal tax dollars were pumped into Nebraska’s economy in 2017, based on census data....
The formation of clay into functioning vessels dates back thousands of years. Add a present-day artist’s interest in fossils and an archaic collaboration is created. For Kaci Schacht, the 23 year-old artist/owner of Mug Schacht’s, inspiration is found close to home. “Dinosaurs have always fascinated me and maybe growing up near Ashfall (Ashfall Fossil Beds State Historical Park, located near Royal) had something to do with that,” reflected Schacht, “and having a mom who loves art.” Her mom, Te...

Now, the small-town company remains afloat, thanks to Jones' nephews: Alex, Brandon and Derek Sonnenfelt. Now known as Trio Tackle, the Sonnenfelt brothers have operated the business from their homes and garages in the Norfolk area since October 2018. Brandon plans to construct a shop in the Hadar area, which will have...

Twenty-nine-forty – an accounting code that identifies an Antelope County Law Enforcement Center fund – has become a familiar term during Antelope County commissioner dialog, as well as a point of contention between county officials. The “special revenue” account was formed after the Law Enforcement Center went into operation in 2015. In the ensuing years, the balance in the account has grown to more than $400,000 from fees charged for housing prisoners from other counties and law enforcement services provided to several Antelope County...

A quest to visit all 531 incorporated towns in Nebraska has turned into a geography lesson for residents of the state. University of Nebraska-Omaha college students Seth Varner and Austin Schneider, of Wahoo, got the idea after college classes moved to online learning in March, when the coronavirus pandemic curbed traditional learning and sent college students back home for the semester. The statewide road trip is similar to a venture Varner took with his dad nearly a decade ago. "We were going...

Charlie Henery, chairman of the Antelope County board of commissioners, told his peers, when they met at the courthouse last Tuesday, June 2, that the condition of a road north of Clearwater embarrassed him.
