  • Isms: Views on life in rural America

    LuAnn Schindler, Publisher|Jan 15, 2025

Dear Mark Zuckerberg: How ironic your company axed its fact-checking program, aimed at stopping the proliferation of disinformation, earlier last week. Imagine my surprise on Thursday, when this newspaper, a community weekly covering the Summerland region in Nebraska, had a post celebrating Orchard Fire and Rescue Department members honored for long-time service, removed from Facebook. • Out my kitchen window

    Bev Wieler, Columninst|Dec 25, 2024

As I look out my kitchen window, there are lights twinkling, greenery and red bows filling what was flower pots. Inside my table is filling with seed catalogs. I’m usually anxious when they arrive the end of December but this year they arrived a bit early. Believe me, I still quickly flip them open, scanning what might be new in the garden world. Perhaps I should change what’s new in the garden world to, what’s new to me. I spotted some rainbow broom that could be interesting in Fall bouquets. I...

  • Nebraska author's childhood inspired Christmas movie that became a '70s holiday tradition

    Tim Trudell, Flatwater Free Press|Dec 25, 2024

Gail Rock credits an unusual collaborator that inspired a 1970s holiday season staple and launched her career as an author: a mouse. The mouse, which scurried atop the stove in a friend's home, triggered a series of events that birthed "The House Without a Christmas Tree," a television movie that aired each Christmas season on CBS from 1972 to 1977. It eventually became a novel, written by Rock, and led to several TV movie spinoffs. The story centers on a young girl who longs for a Christmas...

  • Republicans have a lengthy 'wish list' after retaining filibuster-proof majority

    Paul Hammel, Nebraska Statehouse Correspondent|Dec 4, 2024

Everyone has a "wish list" – things they'd like to get done, things they'd like to see happen, things they wish would come true. But the Nebraska Republican Party recently put together the mother of all wish lists. In a four-page document unveiled last month, the Nebraska GOP listed more than 70 policy changes they'd like to see at the state, local and national level. The long list of wishes include returning the state to a "winner-take-all" system of awarding its electoral votes for p...
