  • From Angola to Atlanta, Ewing to UNMC and beyond

    Kelsey Kirk, UNMC Communications|May 8, 2024

Reprinted with permission from UNMC Communications Edson DeOliveira still remembers walking out of the house on his first day of third grade. He caught the faint scent of manure and spotted a cattle trailer on a neighboring lot. "We're not in Atlanta anymore," he thought. Not only was the DeOliveira family's home in Ewing, Nebraska, a stark contrast from their last home in Atlanta, but it also was a far cry from their first home in Angola. But growing up in the rural Nebraska village ended up...

  • Nebraska Wesleyan Costume library holds 60,000 plus items available for Nebraska theater programs, public

    Marissa Kraus, Nebraska News Service|Oct 26, 2023

Every day, Ellen Rudd ventures down to the basement of the Nebraska Wesleyan's theater building, Elder Theatre Center. She enters a whole new world – or rather, an infinite amount of worlds. Rudd doesn't have a typical job and this isn't a typical basement. Rudd is manager of the costume library, which holds an inventory of an estimated 60,000 costumes, props and shoes. Established in 1980, the costume library acts as a significant resource for theater departments in and outside of Nebraska. I...

  • Six years after 'Cabela's debacle,' Sidney's lights are still on

    Natalia Alamdari, Flatwater Free Press|Apr 13, 2023

The forest green roof and pair of bronze stags frozen in combat are impossible to miss as you drive down Interstate 80. So are the two corporate buildings – 550,000 square feet of nearly empty office space, long offered for a $1 a year lease. The water tower looms overhead, painted in the same green, heralding what once was: "Cabela's World Headquarters, City of Sidney." For 54 years, Cabela's made its home here, a juggernaut that kept the town humming. But in 2017, the sporting goods store s...

  • New Mystery Remembering Nebraska's forgotten "whodunit queen"

    Carson Vaughan, Flatwater Free Press|Mar 30, 2023

When reporter Eva Mahoney arrived in Valentine in 1930 to profile America’s next great mystery novelist, she found Mignon Good Eberhart in a “pleasant little home,” struggling to visualize her next murder. Bewitched by her new surroundings, the big skies and grassy dunes, the author had contrived a remote hunting lodge in the Nebraska Sandhills as the site for her fictional crime. It had log doors, “a great, deep fireplace made of native, unfinished rock,” Eberhart wrote, and a hodgepodge of antique pewter lamps, a quirk of the cabin’s late own...

  • Remarks from Mark

    Mark Mahoney, Journalist|Feb 18, 2021

Super Bowl Sunday was a fun day for me, as it featured three of my favorite things: family, food and football. The only disappointing part, though? The final score of the big game, which didn't go in favor of my favorite pro football team. I didn't expect the Kansas City Chiefs to get beat down, 31-9, by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, a team Kansas City defeated, 27-24, on Nov. 29 in a regular-season road game. What I did expect was a close championship contest, with the Chiefs coming out on top in T...

  • Preserving tomatoes

    Terri Hahn|Aug 13, 2020

A couple of weeks ago, a lifelong friend and I took a road trip through Western and North Central Nebraska. We checked out Chimney Rock, the Scotts Bluff National Monument, Toadstool Geologic Park near Crawford and the Niobrara River near Valentine. Social distancing was not a problem. The first night of that five-day trip we spent in Oshkosh, where I grew up and where my travel companion and I met on her third birthday. Her family was new to the neighborhood, her mom was looking for enough...
