Like a comet that swings by the earth every few years, there's been talk now and then about placing some huge development between Omaha and Lincoln along the Platte River. Between the state's two largest cities would be an ideal location for a new football stadium for the Cornhuskers, the reasoning goes. An airport there would attract more flights to and from our state. And wouldn't a huge lake look great along Interstate 80 in that spot? Back in the day, the idea was to dam up the Platte River...
Nebraska doesn't get many national headlines about politics, but a recent, last-minute push by major Republicans to get the state to ditch its unique system of awarding electoral votes for president did just that. Former President Donald Trump and leading GOP Sen. Lindsey Graham were among those applying the pressure recently to return to a "winner-take-all" system. Only Nebraska and Maine don't give all of its electoral votes to the statewide winner of the popular vote for president. Instead, N...
Almost four decades ago, two coaches - one from the east coast, the other from the land of the Cornhuskers - formed an alliance. Maine and Nebraska would become as thick as thieves. Despite the large differences between the two states, a friendship was pinned down and has lasted for years. Lincoln Southeast wrestling coach, Mick Pierce, and Maine's, Wally LaFountain, a wrestling official from Maine, met in the 80s during a wrestling trip to Europe, according to current Maine coach Brian Cote....
After a 76-day search on the coaching trail, Nebraska officially introduced its 31st head coach, Monday. Matt Rhule, a former walk-on Big 10 linebacker at Penn State and former coach in collegiate and NFL ranks, will make $72 million for an eight-year stint. Nebraska Athletic Director Trev Alberts told the crowd assembled in the Hawks Championship Center, he interacted with 13 coaches throughout the search process. "Candidate 1A, for me and the University of Nebraska, was always Matt Rhule,"...
Nick Herringer claps along with a metronome. He draws lines on a big screen, repeating patterns drawn by the computer. He identifies icons of cars when they flash before his eyes. This is the 22-year-old's speech and cognitive therapy, which he has been doing at least twice a week. Every week. For three years. Nick's thick brown hair hides a massive, ear-to-ear scar from his four brain surgeries for glioblastoma, an aggressive brain cancer he has battled since he was a teenager. His mom, Tammy Herringer, drives Nick to therapy and back. She...
Where were you 50 years ago, on Thanksgiving, when two of the top college football programs battled it out in what is known as the game of the century? I was hoping for a repeat outcome Saturday, when Nebraska traveled to Norman, but like many games in recent Husker history, we did not capitalize on opportunities in the scarlet zone. Part of me says, “Take the moral victory against the (then) third-ranked team in the country.” Part of me says, “Oh no, here we go again.” I refuse to debate...
I'm feeling a bit blue this week about the state of NCAA Division I men's college basketball in Nebraska. The fifth-seeded Creighton Bluejays lost, 83-65, to the top-seeded Gonzaga Bulldogs on Sunday in the sweet 16 of the 2021 NCAA tournament. That means the Bulldogs march on in the national championship competition while the Bluejays fly home, disappointed, from Indiana. Creighton was the only team from the state of Nebraska in the men's NCAA tournament this year – as the Bluejays usually a...
I’ve got a spring in my step because the time of year has arrived for college basketball’s big dance. There was plenty of March mayhem during the early rounds of the 2021 NCAA Division I men’s tournament. Many teams were upset by other squads they were favored to beat, which I’m sure upset the fans of the losing programs. The Creighton Bluejays, however, defeated their first two opponents to make the sweet 16 for the first time since 1974. I’m a fan of the Nebraska Cornhuskers first, especiall...
Super Bowl Sunday was a fun day for me, as it featured three of my favorite things: family, food and football. The only disappointing part, though? The final score of the big game, which didn't go in favor of my favorite pro football team. I didn't expect the Kansas City Chiefs to get beat down, 31-9, by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, a team Kansas City defeated, 27-24, on Nov. 29 in a regular-season road game. What I did expect was a close championship contest, with the Chiefs coming out on top in T...
The annual Nebraska Cornhuskers Red and White spring game will have a twist this year, due to COVID-19 restrictions. On Saturday, April 18, Nebraska Athletics will stream a video game simulation, based in Memorial Stadium and Tom Osborne Field. Husker football legends will fill both squads. The stream will be live on the Huskers Facebook and Twitter accounts, as well as the Husker FBNation Twitch channel. Audio from Learfield IMG College/Husker Sports radio network will be played. According to...
Blair Hillman, 39, from Long Beach, California, and formerly from Wynot, died Jan. 19 after a short illness. Leave it to Blair to enter and exit this world on the same day - he always had a way of being unique. There will be an open house Feb. 15 at the Wynot Fire Hall from 4 to 8 p.m. A memorial service and video tribute will be at 5:30 p.m., for his family and friends. He was a Wynot boy, he was proud of coming from Nebraska. A celebration of life was held Jan. 24, at Joe Josts Pub, in Long Beach. ~~~ Blair was born Jan. 19, 1981, at Sacred H...
