If I asked you to name four movies that define your teenage years, what would be your response? In the past two weeks, I’ve seen social media posts asking individuals to select four films they identify with from their teen years. Naming four would be a snap if I grew up in the 1980s ... “Sixteen Candles,” “The Breakfast Club,” “Karate Kid,” “Fast Times at Ridgemont High.” Those ‘80s comedies celebrated teen angst at its best and provided comic relief. Movies from my era, a decade prior, ran t...
If you know me well, you know that fall - primarily football season - is one of my favorite times of the year. My family has a long-standing relationship with Husker football. Before the ‘rents married, Dad purchased box seats, near the field of Memorial Stadium. He didn’t miss a game. Once they were hitched, they became season ticket holders and since 1955, someone from our family could be found sitting in our west stadium seats. Dad always said he should have requested four tickets ins...

Random thoughts ... a.k.a. I am multi-tasking and a million ideas are racing through my mind. I’ll number them to give this column some semblance of order. 1. Best quote I have read in a long time. “Left, right or center - facts have no party line.” Spot. On. Many times at our house, Scott and I get into heated political discussions. He tells me I am not paying attention to what is happening (uh no, I pay attention all day long). Then I explain he fails to fact check before sharing some talki...
It’s been a weird summer, hasn’t it? Traditional Memorial Day programs were few and far between. Father’s Day was observed with proper “social distancing.” Fourth of July celebrations were canceled and most of the fireworks we saw were on TV. “Back to school” for many students across the country meant “back to the kitchen table.” And as for fall, I’m still trying to wrap my head around September, October and November with no Husker football or volleyball. And even the sporting events tha...

Some weeks, I know exactly what I want to say when it comes to this column. The idea takes root and over the weekend, I write and rewrite in my mind before committing word to paper. Other weeks, it seems like a million ideas swirl and nothing catches my complete attention. That’s sort of how I feel this week: a lot of words could be written on multiple topics, but I’m not sure there’s anything new to say about politics, the state of the nation, defunding police and the virus that disru...
A cottony billow of dandelion seeds caught my attention Saturday, while I placed flowers along the row of family members’ graves in the Oakdale cemetery. The flower seemed out of place among the carpet of velvety green grass, its wispy, circular head swaying in rhythm with the gentle breeze. By the time I’d placed bouquets near each headstone, most of the seeds had scattered. The moment reminded me of family and Memorial Days past, times we would gather at our grandparents’ farm and celeb...

On Monday of this week, Speaker Scheer announced the Legislature would return from our extended adjournment on July 20. I believe that this is an appropriate time to allow the curve in Nebraska to flatten and to give senators and staff time to prepare to finish our session for this year. I am grateful for the time laid out before us to work on how the Legislature can best set up the state for success as we emerge from the conditions we have been under. The top item on my list of priorities...

For now, O’Donnell said everyone at the Nebraska State Capitol is doing what they can to prevent the virus from spreading among leg...
