As cold weather approaches and Nebraskans remove watercraft, docks and other boating equipment from the water, Nebraska Game and Parks encourages boat owners to check equipment for zebra mussels. Zebra mussels are highly invasive, and when introduced into a water body, can cause millions of dollars in damage to infrastructure and catastrophically effect ecosystems and agricultural areas. “Many boaters already are on the lookout for zebra mussels, but it’s important that every Nebraskan check their equipment for attached mussels so we’re infor...
With its handmade ice cream and prime location at the entrance to East Campus, the Dairy Store is a crowd favorite at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln and a fitting venue for welcoming a university president. The Nebraska Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources hosted an event Sept. 19 at the Dairy Store to unveil an ice cream flavor created in honor of the new University of Nebraska-Lincoln president, Jeffery Gold. Dairy industry leaders and university partners who provide product t...
Labor Day is nearly upon us. While banks will be closed and mail service will be halted for the day, some businesses will be open. Clearwater Market manager Jamie Hart said the store will be open 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 1 and Monday, Sept. 2. "Beginning Sunday, the store will be open every Sunday during those hours," she said. The Advocate-Messenger office will be closed. Staff members will work on the paper since its print deadline is on Tuesday. Copy and advertisements are due...
The boat ramps at Grove Lake Wildlife Management Area in Antelope County are closed until Aug. 30 for repair and replacement. Pending no delays, the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission hopes to have the ramps reopened by Labor Day weekend. The north boat ramp will be replaced as it had begun to heave and separate at the joints. The new concrete ramp will include an Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant parking stall and access. A small part of the south ramp is being removed and replaced. Rip...

As introduced, Gov. Jim Pillen’s core property tax relief proposal could fall short by $139 million in annual estimated revenue needed. Pillen’s main proposal, introduced through Legislative Bill 1 in the special session, includes placing a sales tax on more than 100 currently tax-exempt goods and services. It would also raise seven “sin” taxes, on candy and soft drinks, vapes, cigarettes, keno gambling, spirits, consumable hemp and games of skill. In total, the new or increased taxes would raise an estimated $1.15 billion in the first full fis...
Every candidate for governor always promises two things – to cut property taxes, and eliminate the “waste” in state spending. Both of those pledges are awfully easy to make -- and play well on a TV ad -- and much harder to achieve. Current Gov. Jim Pillen is finding that out this year with his property tax reduction ideas. But he’s adopted a different tactic in cutting the fat from state spending by hiring a high-priced consultant to suggest reductions. He enlisted Epiphany Associates, a Utah-ba...
Another Father’s Day is nearing an end. How have we spent it? With the exception of a two-hour lunch date, the “Yellowstone” Father’s Day marathon has been playing. And, just like the “Yellowstone” Mother’s Day marathon and the Memorial Day marathon and any other excuse needed to air 72 hours of the popular TV show, John Dutton’s family’s woes have provided background noise. Thank goodness it has a solid soundtrack to sing along with while I work on the paper and fiddle with household chores....

"We had no idea anything was wrong." That's how Skylar and Cabre Reynolds describe the first few minutes of their daughter Teigyn's life. The 5-pound 8-ounce bundle of joy, the couple's first child, arrived Sept. 12, 2023, at Boone County Health Center in Albion. It would take approximately six weeks before the Reynolds would learn Teigyn was battling neuroendocrine cell hyperplasia of infancy, a rare disorder of the lungs. This Sunday, residents from Skylar's hometown will host a benefit for...
This week, my personal priority bill, LB1301, was put before the Unicameral for the first stage of consideration. LB1301 would modernize our state’s existing laws relating to foreign land ownership. The bill would add greater oversight and tighten restrictions on so-called restricted entities or their agents, trustees or fiduciaries, referenced in two federal lists: the persons and entities designated by the Office of Foreign Assets Control and the six countries designated as foreign a...
Governor Jim Pillen wants all state government employees at their desks in their assigned departments beginning next month. He said the pandemic-era remote is over, although both empirical and anecdotal evidence nationwide show a workplace change that was pandemic caused has become the new normal. Oh, and never mind the fact that some state agencies have remote and telework policies that have been in place for 15 years. And, of course, not every department has the physical space available for...
Just when you thought the drought was bad, deserts have started popping up in Nebraska. Pick a topic: childcare; food; maternal health care. They have been discussed in the interim by lawmakers and deserve to be included among bills under consideration next session. It's time to start looking at problems affecting Nebraskans and not the national agenda of one political party. For example, the state could help encourage more doctors to dedicate their time and specialty to labor and delivery care...
Nearly 1.2 million Americans live in nursing homes today. The vast majority of those Americans are seniors, people who urgently need the specialized care that long-term nursing facilities provide. That's especially true in small towns, where a greater percentage of the population is over 65. But this fall, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services proposed a rule that could close nursing facilities across rural America. The rule proposed in September has the stated goal of improving care in...

Their low, rumbling bellow first cuts through the silence of the Sandhills. Next comes the crunch of pointed hooves, trudging their way through tall prairie grasses. Then, the oohs of the out-of-towners watching – people up close and personal with the majestic thousand-pound mammals for the first time. This is Golden Prairie Bison, a ranch nestled in the Sandhills where Carl and Vicki Simmons raise a herd of 50 bison. Theirs is one of the dozens of bison ranches in Nebraska, one piece of an o...
They knew the record-breaking attendance number before the rest of the world. The iconic attendance number that hovered over the northeast corner of Memorial Stadium on the night of Aug. 30 was the work of Fantasy Drone Shows, a Norfolk-based aerial entertainment company. The assistant athletic director of marketing and fan experience confirmed the final attendance number at approximately 7:50 p.m., leaving the company with less than an hour to program and launch 150 drones to announce the...
Cycling along the Cowboy Trail in the 105-degree heat requires faith for safe travels. It also requires hope for a successful mission. It's definitely a labor of love and a means to do the Lord's work. For a group of Ohio cyclists, who spent Aug. 21 in Ewing, it's all in a day's pedaling. "Our group started in the late 1980s," said Dr. Ken Gifford, a retired pastor from Youngstown, Ohio. Originally known as the Pedaling Parsons, the group was comprised of Methodist church pastors "who shared a...

The summer driving season is winding down and the Nebraska State Patrol is joining numerous law enforcement agencies across the country in this year’s Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign. The effort runs through Labor Day weekend. “This has been a busy summer on Nebraska roads,” said Colonel John Bolduc, superintendent of the Nebraska State Patrol. “As we close out the summer travel season, let’s make any final summer road trips safe by following the speed limit, wearing a seat belt, avoiding distractions, and always driving sober.” T...
Nebraska is on display for the next 10 days at the Nebraska State Fair and Nebraska state troopers will be working to keep the event safe for all. Troopers are also looking to recruit the next generation of troopers throughout the fair. "We're excited for another great year at the Nebraska State Fair," said Captain Dean Riedel, commander of Troop C, based in Grand Island. "We encourage everyone to travel safely on the way to the fair and have a great time during the event. Our troopers will be o...
Each year, dozens of American farmers are injured or killed after they climb into a grain bin. A father-son duo from Aurora founded their one-of-a-kind company with one mission: No more boots in that grain. Chad Johnson and son Ben Johnson have created a robot, the Grain Weevil, meant to do most of the necessary – and oft-dangerous – tasks that farmers do inside their bins. The pair started developing their robot in 2020, after a farmer friend asked them to build a robot so the farmer would nev...
