Nebraska football's rich history is intertwined alongside that of college football, and its home stadium is, too. Ground broke on the first iteration of Memorial Stadium April 26, 1923, about 33 years after Nebraska football played its first game. The 31,080-seat stadium was ready in time for the following season, hosting Nebraska's 24-0 victory over Oklahoma in the stadium's inaugural contest in October 1923. The rest is history. Nebraska has sold out 382 consecutive games at Memorial Stadium,...
Josh Napier, of Ewing, won the Husker football prediction contest for the Huskers Nov. 26 game against the Hawkeyes. He selected Iowa to defeat Nebraska, 27-21. The final score was 28-21. "Hoping that team to the east eats too much tomorrow," he wrote on his Facebook entry. Pigskin predictions will take a break until the bowl game schedule is released, Dec. 5. A complete listing of games will appear in the Advocate-Messenger and on the SAM Facebook page. The individual selecting the winning...
Peyton Thomas Unlimited Sports/Nebraska News Service LINCOLN--While the Collegiate Brand Value Index ranks the University of Nebraska-Lincoln the most valuable school in the nation, success in the world of name, image and likeness is far from guaranteed. "There are lots of different lists out there, right of likes, who has the most social media followers, the highest level of revenue, and all kinds of things," said Matt Balvanz, a writer at Navigate Sports Business, who created a metric to...

Where were you 50 years ago, on Thanksgiving, when two of the top college football programs battled it out in what is known as the game of the century? I was hoping for a repeat outcome Saturday, when Nebraska traveled to Norman, but like many games in recent Husker history, we did not capitalize on opportunities in the scarlet zone. Part of me says, “Take the moral victory against the (then) third-ranked team in the country.” Part of me says, “Oh no, here we go again.” I refuse to debate...

He predicted Nebraska to throttle Fordham, 52-7. A final Nebraska touchdown by Mar...
The University of Nebraska- Lincoln announced Wednesday morning that former Husker All-American Trev Alberts will be its next athletic director. Alberts returns to the Huskers after serving as the athletic director for the University of Nebraska-Omaha since 2009. During his tenure, he helped transition UNO to Division I athletics, cutting the football and wrestling program in the process. Alberts replaces Bill Moos as athletic director after his abrupt retirement last month. Alberts played football at Nebraska from 1990 to 1993. In his senior...
Emily Dickinson wrote, “Hold dear to your parents for it is a scary and confusing world without them.” So true. I’ve been sentimental lately, tears have flowed fairly steadily, as Father’s Day nears. I cannot count the number of times, since the new year started, I would be watching a Husker basketball or baseball game and think, “I need to call Dad and remind him the Huskers are playing.” I cannot count the number of times I hear some song pop on the radio and I am transported to Clay Center...
Super Bowl Sunday was a fun day for me, as it featured three of my favorite things: family, food and football. The only disappointing part, though? The final score of the big game, which didn't go in favor of my favorite pro football team. I didn't expect the Kansas City Chiefs to get beat down, 31-9, by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, a team Kansas City defeated, 27-24, on Nov. 29 in a regular-season road game. What I did expect was a close championship contest, with the Chiefs coming out on top in T...

While I count my blessings each and every day, I have never cared for Thanksgiving. Bad memories tend to resurface. Like how the smell of turkey roasting in the oven reminds me of three-year-old LuAnn, who was ill with influenza, tried a bite of turkey and couldn’t keep it down. Grandma Fields understood my pain, and every year, she also baked a ham so people, -er, I could have another choice. Simpler times then. In 2003, my husband died from a pulmonary embolism, two days before T...
When I pitched this idea, only one reporter balked at spending time at a thrift store with his co-workers. It’s okay, Mark. I understand. Even Scott gets tired when I drag him to a resale shop in whatever town we happen to drive through. The premise for this story was simple: I will give each of you $10 to spend on an outfit or outfits. Who can get the most number of quality items at a low price and put together an outfit for work or a night out on the town. Basically, I wanted to know which o...
The annual Nebraska Cornhuskers Red and White spring game will have a twist this year, due to COVID-19 restrictions. On Saturday, April 18, Nebraska Athletics will stream a video game simulation, based in Memorial Stadium and Tom Osborne Field. Husker football legends will fill both squads. The stream will be live on the Huskers Facebook and Twitter accounts, as well as the Husker FBNation Twitch channel. Audio from Learfield IMG College/Husker Sports radio network will be played. According to...
W.T. Ellis stated, "It is Christmas in the heart that puts Christmas in the air." The Orchard Historical Society seems to keep the community involved by hosting events for people to partake in. On Sunday, Dec. 15, they hosted a tour of homes, with six participants. Each destination featured a different thing to intrigue visitors with the holiday season. First on the list to visit was the old schoolhouse in Orchard. The Historical Society has put a lot of time and effort into restoring the school...
I predicted how the latest episode would play out; I didn't know exactly when. Once the prodigal son decided to return home and resurrect a football program clinging to life support, I told Scott - my Scott, not the Frosty version - fans would flip out and sport their badges of negativity proudly, if he didn't win immediately and turn the program around in two years. And, without missing a beat, the bandwagon chanting "Fire Frost," sung by armchair quarterbacks and hidden social media trolls,...
Throughout the summer, as Scott and I watched preseason coverage of the Husker football team, we both noted the number of young men sporting mullets. I always thought Mike Gundy earned best mullet honors until my 'Skers proved they're rockin' the tunnel walk with the achy-breaky hairdo. Since my main man decided to bring back the party in the front and business in the back, a flashback from his high school senior year, he thinks the modern mullet obsession is cool. Awesome. So cool that this sum...
