The Summerland Bobcats came out firing on all cylinders and held strong to secure a 61-48 victory over Norfolk Catholic in a highly anticipated Top-5 matchup on Tuesday, Dec. 10, at Summerland. The Bobcats set the tone early, jumping out to a commanding 20-8 lead in the first quarter. Fueled by aggressive play on both ends of the floor, Summerland capitalized on their intense start and forced Norfolk Catholic to play from behind. However, Norfolk Catholic didn't go quietly, responding with a...
The Summerland Bobcats shook off a slow start to claim a decisive 65-22 victory over the Niobrara/Verdigre Cougars in a non-conference matchup Friday, Dec. 13. While the Bobcats led 16-0 after the first quarter, Coach Brett Kaczor noted the team lacked its usual intensity early on. "We came out flat in the first half against N/V. We got a lot of good looks, but we were just not locked in enough to finish possessions," Kaczor said. The Cougars managed to get on the board in the second quarter,...

The semifinal match up, played on the Bobcat's home turf, saw Summerland score first on an 11-play, 72-yard drive orchestrated by senior quarterback Michael Koenig. The Bobcats led at the top of each quarter and were poised to score again when the Stanton's Becker Pohlman intercepted a pass from the Mustang five yard line and returned it to...
The best laid plans often go awry. Such was the case, March 6, for the Summerland boys' basketball team. Unfortunately, the awry moment arrived at the Devaney Sports Center during the Bobcats' opening-round game against Cross County in the Class C2 state basketball tournament, causing an early exit after a 44-30. The opening minutes of the game looked promising. The Bobcats took a 6-2 lead, powered by junior Preston Hoke. But Cross County responded with a 14-0 run. They never looked back....

What a great time to be a Bobcat! Our students are shining in all activities. Backtrack to November when the volleyball team qualified for state competition and the football team played in two rounds of the playoff system. Nothing like starting the year off on the right foot. The marching band did well at competition in Wayne. Speech and drama students continue to earn awards. Next week, the speechsters compete in a tough C2 district, a trip to the state meet on the line. I have a feeling...
In what may have been the most complete game they've played this season, the Summerland boys' team knew when to apply pressure and make it count. The Bobcats dismantled Perkins County, 65-34, in the C2-6 district final, played Feb. 27 at Kearney Catholic. The Bobcats took a 12-10 lead after the first quarter and went on an unmatched scoring spree in the second and third quarters to secure the win and a trip to the state tournament. Coach Brett Kaczor said, "The district game was the most...
By the time this edition of SAM lands in readers' mailboxes, they'll know if the Bobcats will make a trip to the 2024 state basketball championships. Summerland was slated to play Perkins County, Tuesday, in the C2-6 district final at Kearney Catholic. The "Advocate-Messenger" went to press several hours before tipoff. The route to Kearney began with what coach Brett Kaczor called "two very physical back-and-forth games" during subdistricts. The Bobcats hadn't seen Valentine play. Kaczor and...
On a misty Saturday evening, West Holt boys' basketball team and fans flooded the Summerland court after knocking off the Bobcats, 55-49, in the Niobrara Valley Conference Tournament Championship. The Bobcats had the potential to defeat the Huskies for a third time this season but West Holt went on a 22-8 run in the second quarter to secure the win. "In the championship, I think West Holt just wanted it a little bit more than us. It's hard enough to beat somebody twice in a year, let alone...
Preston Hoke scored 11 points and grabbed four steals, leading the Bobcats to a 47-33 win over Wausa, in a contest played at home, Jan. 25. Summerland jumped to a 20-10 lead after one and extended the margin to 34-18 at the break. While the Vikings outscored the hometown boys in the final quarter, it wasn't enough to catch the 'Cats. Coach Brett Kaczor said his team played in two very physical, highly competitive games last week. "EV was an electric, big atmosphere game with both teams making...

Then, the Bobcat defense upped its game, holding West Holt to 13 second-half points to secure a 61-38 win. The Bobcats shot 53% from the two-point range and made 10-15...
A fourth-quarter surge lifted Summerland to a five-point win, Thursday, as the Bobcats slipped past the O'Neill Eagles, 45-40. Michael Koenig led Summerland with 16 points. Preston Hoke chipped in another 10. Coach Brett Kaczor said his team "battled through two very tough tests last week." He felt some detrimental habits from the second half of the Stuart game carried over into the start of the O'Neill game. "We found ourselves down double digits late in the second half. Both games though, we...
Michael Koenig poured in 16 points, while Preston Hoke scored a dozen in Friday's 63-19 lopsided win over Niobrara/Verdigre. Still, head coach Brett Kaczor said his team did not get off to a great start. "We gave up two offensive rebounds and turned the ball over three times in the first couple minutes of the game and found ourselves down 0-4 right away," he said. Summerland jumped out to a 29-4 lead in the first quarter and extended the spread to 44-11 by the half. Part way through the third...
Three players landed in double digits in Summerland's Thursday season opener against Neligh-Oakdale. "Our defensive pressure caused a lot of havoc that led to transition buckets. We weren't overly efficient in our half-court offense,...
(right) The Renegades' William Jesse swats the ball over the hand of Summerland's Michael Koenig, during the tipoff of Friday's contest in Chambers. The Bobcats took control early, winning 70-29. We have to stay locked in with that mindset and just worry about going "1-0" each time we step on the court," coach Brett Kaczor said....
Basketball enthusiasts may notice one rule change when regular-season play begins tonight. The one and one is done. Instead, the bonus - two free throws - will be awarded for common fouls committed when a team is in the bonus. A second change is that teams will be in bonus once the opponent commits five fouls in a quarter. Fouls reset each quarter. Summerland boys' basketball coach Brett Kaczor said he likes the change. "It's going to take some time to really get used to shooting two free...

Summerland's Michael Koenig scored 21 points during Monday's Class C2-5 championship game in Tilden. Coach Brett Kaczor said his squad knew it would be a tough game and made a few adjustments during practice to give them a different look. "Brendyn Ollendick is a really good player who we tried to keep in check, but he is just so...
Summerland boys' basketball team finished third in the Niobrara Valley Conference Tournament, downing Stuart, 51-42, Saturday, at Niobrara. "I thought our guys handled themselves really well for a busy, tough week," said Coach Brett Kaczor. "The conference is so balanced and we knew we would be in for a battle every game. Our goal was to be playing on Saturday in the last game and even though we fell short of playing the nightcap, we still got ourselves to Saturday, which is a major confidence...
