What is the best gift found around any Christmas tree? According to syndicated columnist Burton Hillis, the answer is "a happy family all wrapped up in each other." Friday, while sorting a few holiday items in the Sidebar, in preparation for a vendor show, I unfolded a quilted table runner and immediately was transported to my grandparents' home in Tilden. The pink and black floral print, swatches patched together with coordinating colors, resembled a queen-size quilt and matching pillow cases m...
“I don’t need stress; I need my shopping bag. It’s almost Black Friday.” Um, I’ve never uttered those words, much alone given day-after-Thanksgiving sales a lot of thought. I’ve gone shopping on Black Friday a handful of times. The first time was nearly 25 years ago. The Menards sales ad listed several great deals and our family decided we needed a certain item from the circular. What item? I don’t remember. I’m sure it was some insignificant piece of plastic made outside of the USA, but hey, t...
Last week's poll question has stirred a craving for pizza. Specifically, Mom's homemade pizza. The crust wasn't fancy. Usually, she whipped up the recipe printed on the Bisquick box and added a few herbs and spices to make it her own. She'd brown seasoned ground beef, mince a yellow onion, chop black olives into rings and dice mushrooms and green peppers. A thin coating of pizza sauce and generous amount of mozzarella made it a special treat. Homemade with love, not a quick and easy takeout...
CORTLAND – It's five days before the big day. The Model A dashes down West Fourth Street. Its driver pulls up to a brick storefront and strolls inside, jaunty, dressed in his Sunday best. The black-and-white scene turns technicolor, like a Gage County "Pleasantville," as a brunette with cherry red lips leans in with a coffee pot and winks. Welcome to Paper Moon Pastries, the 1930s-style small-town bakery inspired by a classic movie – its public introduction captured by drone and iPhone. Tha...
Having guests for Thanksgiving dinner is great. Having treasured friends and family stick around for a couple of extra days is even better. But guests have to eat and you just spent a week (or more!) preparing that big holiday meal and you're simply "cooked out." Sure, leftovers will work for a meal or two, but eventually you're going to have to prepare something else. And don't forget that big football game coming up on Friday afternoon, with even more games on TV over the weekend. That adds...
Are Nebraska diehards the worst fans in college football or do they live up to the perceived hype of being the greatest? After Saturday, I’m embarrassed by the actions of multiple so-called armchair quarterbacks who hide behind a keyboard and, on social channels, chastise an entire coaching staff and a team of 18-20-something-year-olds who play a game. Calling for the coaching staff to be fired immediately? Pointing out players’ mistakes on social media? Everyone has an opinion on how to coa...
The rock band Bread sang, "Life can be short or long. Love can be right or wrong, and if I chose the one I'd like to help me through, I'd like to make it with you." This was the one of three songs sang at Sam and Barb Schwager's wedding on July 15, 1972. The Orchard couple celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary this past weekend, with loved ones, sharing their history and reminiscing about the past. The love story started in June 1970, at Barb's cousin's wedding dance, at the Legion Club in...
Growing up on a hill overlooking North Omaha during World War II, Mary Carpenter remembers the numerous vegetable plots, called victory gardens, that dotted her Florence neighborhood. “Everybody had one,” said Carpenter, the reporter’s mother-in-law. “We grew everything - asparagus, potatoes, tomatoes, black raspberries, pears, even grapes. That’s what fed us and supplemented our food.” Over the ensuing decades, many of those gardens disappeared as grocery stores started carrying seasonal produce year round. Yet 80 years later, everything...
Homecoming week kicks off for Summerland students, Monday, Sept. 27. Student council members have planned a week full of activities to promote Bobcat pride that will lead to the crowning of the king and queen, during halftime, of the Oct. 1 football game, in Orchard. Students will have opportunities to earn points for their class, with a spirit trophy being awarded at the end of the week. Spirit week begins with five opportunities to show off school spirit. Students are encouraged to wear a...
It's BLT season and I couldn't be happier By Terri Hahn Friday, June 18, was marked on my calendar for weeks. I was literally counting down the days. The anticipation grew. So what important event was happening on the day? Not a birthday. Not an anniversary. Not the day I would inherit a lot of money. It was the day my favorite area produce stand opened for the summer. And that means it's BLT season. Because we all know that tomatoes are the most important ingredient in BLTs. Bacon, lettuce, may...
One year after area schools featured virtual and socially-distanced graduation ceremonies, Summerland School superintendent Dale Martin said 2021 commencement exercises will not have restrictions. "No special rules," he said. "It does sound like we will live stream all three graduations." Graduation ceremonies will be held at each site, beginning Friday, May 7, in Clearwater. Orchard and Ewing sites will hold Saturday events. Clearwater Ten Clearwater seniors are expected to receive diplomas...
Like most people, I'm guessing, I know that Catholics don't eat meat on Fridays during Lent. (For the record, I'm Methodist.) And like most people, I'm also guessing, I never really stopped to think about why they don't. And why is fish OK? So, doing like most people do these days when looking for an answer to "why," I turned to our good friend Google. This is what I found on the website for the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis at www.archspm.org: "Catholics abstain from flesh meat on...
Last week, I spent part of Thursday, Friday and Saturday meeting colleagues via Zoom, taking part in sessions of the National Newspaper Conference. The socially-distanced version offered multiple chances for sharpening skills and networking with newspaper publishers and reporters from across the United States. The event renewed nearly all of the ethics I believe are key to providing community journalism. And, several sessions left me re-evaluating some ideas newspapers use because “it’s the way...
When I pitched this idea, only one reporter balked at spending time at a thrift store with his co-workers. It’s okay, Mark. I understand. Even Scott gets tired when I drag him to a resale shop in whatever town we happen to drive through. The premise for this story was simple: I will give each of you $10 to spend on an outfit or outfits. Who can get the most number of quality items at a low price and put together an outfit for work or a night out on the town. Basically, I wanted to know which o...
Almost every time I tell Dad goodbye, see you in a few days, he makes a simple request: Maybe you can eat lunch with me soon. I try to visit and share a meal with him at least once a month, more, if possible. It didn't dawn on me until last Friday, while he made his way through a plate of beef tips and noodles and I picked through a salad, why sharing mealtime still matters. Sunday dinner at our house was a thing. A big thing. A fried chicken and mashed potatoes kind of thing. Or pot roast and g...
Clearwater Public and Orchard Public Schools will celebrate homecoming, beginning Tuesday, Sept. 3. Dress up days will be held in each school. Clearwater students will strike their best movie star pose on Tuesday, relive the past during decades day, Wednesday, and sport blue and black for the Bobcats on Thursday. Orchard students will have a dress up day on Tuesday, celebrate wacky Wednesday and pair up for duo day on Thursday. Both schools will cheer for the Cyclones and Bobcats Friday. The...
Ewing Public Schools will celebrate homecoming festivities, beginning Monday, Aug. 26. Be on the lookout for creative costumes and decorative posters in the halls of EHS. On Monday, students will don apparel from their favorite decade, while Tuesday's garb will include hunter and camo gear. Opposite day is scheduled for Wednesday, with Thursday relegated as Bobcat Day. Orange and black will be the predominant theme Friday, as Renegade gear will showcase school spirit. Like their high school...
