When life comes full circle, pay attention. Usually, there's a lesson worth learning. The lesson starts in Clearwater where Adam Ahlers, a "snot-nosed brat kid" spent summers mowing the yard at the Ocea Kirchner residence. Kirchner, a widow, would invite Ahlers into her "little yellow house" after he finished the job. "I had to go to the front door and get my $10," Ahlers told a crowd of approximately 275 people attending Saturday's fundraiser for the Clearwater Veteran's Park, held at the...
At first glance, the Clearwater Veterans Park, located at the intersection of Main and Nebraska streets, pays homage to those who served this country. Flags recognizing each military branch of service wave on the eastern side of a concrete walkway. A bright mural decorates the south wall of the library. A plaque, defining the term "veteran," is installed. Benches supply a place for visitors to sit and reflect. As of Sept. 11, two more pieces have been added: a battlefield cross and a soldier bea...
Since we're writers, we, at SAM love lists. Trust us, we keep and use them every single day. But, how does one determine which articles should be at the top of the yearly list? Reprinted by permission from "The Mercury" A mysterious mammal may be moving further into the Sunflower State. A pair of Kansas State University researchers are beginning work on a three-year project to learn more about the prevalence of the southern flying squirrel in Kansas. One thing that the researchers would be excited to discover is a clue about why this small mammal glows hot pink under ultraviolet light. "It's a strange phenomenon," associate professor Adam Ahlers said. Ahlers grew up...
The first page of the first chapter of Summerland Bobcat football nearly started as a blank book. Turnovers, including a goal line drop, plagued the Bobcats, Friday, as Jeff Shabram’s squad lost, 38-12, to Elkhorn Valley, in Tilden. Yet, Shabram sees a glimmer of hope. “I was encouraged by the fight in the team even after the rough second quarter,” he said. Nine starters return to form the Bobcat squad, including all-district picks Dalton Rotherham and Colton Thiele. “We return a lot of players...
