Approved. Disapproved. Finalized, finally. Those steps led to a Dec. 23 special meeting of the Antelope County commissioners, where a new redistricting map was given the final nod. Commissioners originally approved the district map on Dec. 7; however, a discrepancy was noted in population between two districts. Originally, district three was light and four was heavy, according to county clerk Lisa Payne. "In discussion with the secretar of state's office, (Antelope County Attorney) Joe Abler...

  • -Isms: Views on life in rural America

    LuAnn Schindler, Publisher|Dec 30, 2021

I had to chuckle, Sunday, during one of our family get-togethers, when several of us mentioned we would like to be home by 7 p.m. Why? “Yellowstone.” I was late to the “Yellowstone” bandwagon. Season one had wrapped and Shelly Mlnarik was telling me about the series. I binge watched it in a day and was hooked. Then, Scott watched an episode and was hooked, so we restarted the series. Then, the wait for season two began. Ever since, we’ve been loyal viewers. While I appreciate the actors who comp...

  • Collaboration key to success of new USDA climate-smart agriculture initiative

Kayla Bergman, Senior policy associate Center for Rural Affairs|Dec 30, 2021

With the Biden administration focused on addressing climate change, the U.S. Department of Agriculture recently announced plans for the Climate-Smart Agriculture and Forestry Partnership Initiative. As they move forward with development, it’s crucial USDA works with existing private sector markets. However, the support should not duplicate efforts, nor should a federal program facilitate transactions of carbon sequestration payments to producers. Instead, leaders of this proposed program s...

    Douglas Kristensen, Dr. Jeffrey Gold|Dec 30, 2021

DOUGLAS KRISTENSEN Chancellor University of Nebraska Kearney DR. JEFFREY GOLD Chancellor University of Nebraska Medical Center Our state’s rural areas have much to be proud of: low crime rate, outstanding community pride and neighbors willing to lend a hand are just a few. But it’s no secret that collectively, Nebraskans have watched our rural populations decline over the decades. With those decreases, we lose resources, services and schools, leaving communities disadvantaged in their fight for sustainability. Those of us who are also working h...

  • Set SMART resolutions

    Kelly Evans-Hullinger M.D.|Dec 30, 2021

With 2022 nearly upon us, so, too, is the tradition of the New Year’s resolution. Merriam-Webster defines the New Year’s resolution as “a promise to do something differently in the new year.” I would argue that, in practice, the resolution is less of a promise and more of a hope or intention. My resolution for 2021 was to read 20 books by year’s end. I failed. I could blame my kids, work, other hobbies, but honestly, I blame my phone. In my defense, I was in good company as a flopped resolver; l...

There is a reason dips are a favorite when it comes to party food. More than one reason, actually. And with New Year's gatherings and bowl games on the calendar, this is the time to add a couple of new ideas to your recipe box. Dips are easy to prepare in advance, leaving the host free to spend time with guests. In fact, most dips (except for ones served hot), benefit from a day in the refrigerator, which gives the flavors time to develop. This is especially true if your dips involve any...
